Looking for a balanced tube headamp/preamp - Page 2

Yeah, I saw this thread:

Very interesting.

One thing that intrigues me about Woo is that they're in NYC, which I'm local enough to.  I would love to be able to pick up an amp in person and not having to deal with shipping it!  I'm also curious if they might have a unit I can evaluate first before deciding.  Now wouldn't that be nice!

Wow, just read the 6moons review of the WA22/800 combo.  They certainly seem to like it!

I'm becoming more and more intrigued with the WA22, if they'll make it with a pre-amp output.  After reading the ECBA thread, hearing about people buying units where connections came loose during shipping and then having to send it back to California to be repaired.  That's a lot of expensive shipping not covered under warranty, not to mention the more you ship the thing the more it can be damaged.  Being local to where Woo is manufactured is an incredibly huge plus.

You may want to ask Jack if he can do that for you. I got to hear the HD800 and all the other top headphones through the WA22 at a recent meet and I was highly impressed. Definitely one of the best sounding amps at that meet. Jack is a great guy and I'm sure he will be willing to accommodate your needs.

On a side note I'm surprised the LD is being clumped together with the B52. I haven't had the privilege to hear it but from what I've read isn't it one of the best tube amps in production? money notwithstanding ofcourse confused.gif

Yes, that's precisely what I will do.  From what I read in that other thread I posted, he will do it.

As for lumping the B52 and the LDVI together, if someone's ears like the sound of a $685 amp better than the sound of a $5350 amp, I'm jealous of them!  They have a lucky wallet!  That's what makes this hobby so interesting.  Everyone's tastes are different, and everyone's ears are different.

Hah! Slow down fella:)

Funny thing is, now that the 800 cable has about 100 hours on it, the LD is sounding pretty good! I love this hobby...

I have heard the wa22 and the BA. the wa22 tends to be more layback and the ba more forward. I feel the ba is the better amp, but it would be up to the person buying wither it is worth the extra cash over the BA. The wa22 is a great balanced tube amp for the money.

But have you actually HEARD the B52?  I feel a lot of people say it sounds good because it sounds different, and costs a ton of money.  Since the difference is noticeable, and the cost burden so large, just about everyone who has owned the amp raves about it, calling the difference an "improvement".  I can tell you, however, that I am far from being alone in my opinion that the amp is slow and muddy, and definitely not worth $1000 let alone $5000.

I realize how easy it is to look at the expensive gear, especially the stuff with the cool and unique casework, and get giddy over it.  Heck, I owned the HE90 with the WES!  Still, it is supremely important - especially with regard to the uber expensive gear - to do more than read the worship from those with a financial stake in the amp.

I'll reiterate that I'm just as shocked to see the two amps clumped together, since the LD sounds 100x better ;)

No I haven't heard it, hence the question mark in my comment. I was just surprised that you thought the LD was the better amp that's all.

So:

Eddie Current Balancing Act

Woo Audio WA22 (with pre-amp outs customization)

Any other ideas I should be looking into?

One development here.  I have sold my Little Dot MKVI.  So I definitely am going to need to buy something!  Right now I am playing my balanced HD800's with a SE adapter through the headphone section of my Benchmark DAC-1 Pre.  Decent performer, it'll do for breaking in my Double Helix cable, but long term I need me an amp!!!

I've heard back from Jack Woo, still have some questions to discuss with him about the pre-amp option on the WA22.

What that direction is, I still don't know.  Right now it's a toss up between the WA22, which is within the budget I'm already prepared to spend, or the Eddie Current Balancing Act and the B-52, neither of which I can afford yet.  I do have some more items to sell to in order to raise more funds for one of these fine amps, I'm still not sure which one.  Meanwhile, I continue to browse the for-sale threads for the rare bargain to pop up.

As always, interested in any other suggestions besides the Woo, Eddie Current, or Ray Samuels.

Well.....  I've got a heck of an update.  I've just put down a deposit on an Eddie Current Balancing Act!  Second hand, not joining the upcoming run, but I think this is even better since Craig no longer offers the Alps RK50 upgrade, and the one I'm buying has it.  I sure am looking forward to this!

That is one bad a$$ amp. Send us your impressions once you get it.

Congrats, I look forward to your impressions. Are you getting any tubes with it?

The one I got is with the stock tubes, but I'll be getting some goodies to go along with it I'm sure.
