HIfiman 801 or separate portable amp?

So I'm at a crossroads. My current DAP is the Sanza Fuze+ running to my JH13s. Do I go for a top-tier DAP like the Hifiman or should I get a portable amp for the Sanza? Maybe TWag cable? Basically I have some money burning a hole for audio and I'm not sure what will get me the most bang for my buck. Guide me.

I'd say if you have the money, upgrade your source first, then you can think about an amp and cable upgrade.  The HM-801 pairs very well with the JH16, but you should also consider the Solo (especially if you already have a compatible iDevice).

The HM801 is a great sounding unit and has a lot of versatility when used as a USB DAC. Will you be using this unit as a portable or at a quite place like an office/home? I ask because there is no great advantage IMO to carry with you a lot of gear when walking/running since the noise from cars/buses/trains will overpower any improvements. Of course this only my opinion and others will not necessarily agree. Good luck.

I'll be using it for both mobile and stationary purposes. I'm hoping it'll be versatile enough to power both the 13 pros as well as DT770s when I get those or an equivalent later on.
