Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 80-Ohm Appreciation Thread - Page 2

Been using these for a couple of years soon. Snagged a lucky deal on a Benchmark DAC-1 to power them and my K701s.

These are a great pair to contrast the K701s and later Stax models. I like using them for quite a few bass heavy genres and gaming. Coupled with a table mic it is my gaming sound setup of choice.

I got this today because my M-50's where to uncomfortable, they are a lot better in the comfort issue.

I've read several comments about this being well built but the M-50's seemed to be more durable, and im really scared to pull that little cable, has someone had probles with the headphone little cables????

Please answer me i can take'em back still.

I just picked up a pair of these yesterday at my local guitar center.  I have a few questions, if it's not hijacking...

The pair I heard was brand new, fresh from the box (didn't have one 'on the floor'), and is the same pair I took home.   I heard them with my iPhone (all ALAC), and they sounded perfect to me.  I read the comments about them being a basshead 'phone, but when I heard them in the store, they seemed just right.  I figured a far better source and amplification would make them sound even better.

Got them home and hooked up to my Bryston B60, and Apple TV1 feeding Rega DAC (again, all ALAC).  Pretty disappointed so far.  The bass quality is superb IMO.  Tight, strong, detailed, etc.  The quality of it is far better than a lot of very expensive speaker systems I've heard, to be totally honest.   Living right outside of NYC, I've heard quite a few $100k system, not that I could afford anything like them.  

The problem is that there's way too much bass.  Every system I've heard puts drums at the back and center of the soundstage.  These cans have it up front.  In Tool's The Pot and Metallica's One, there's drums and bass (maybe not bass guitar in One), and then there's everything else.  Same for pretty much everything else I listened to - mainly metal, classic rock and alt rock.  Funny thing though, Bob Marley's Legend has some of the most prominent bass lines in my collection, yet it sounded far less prominent on that album than any others.

They're fresh out of the box, and I listened an hour at most yesterday.  To be honest, that was tough.  I ran them for about 10 hours straight today, but I didn't get the chance to listen again, as my wife and I left to go visit family for the weekend.  I'd have left them running until we get back on Monday evening, but didn't want to leave the system running unattended.

So my questions are...

Do the balance out with some burn in?  I love the quality, but just can't take the quantity.  

How long have you guys burned them in before they balanced out?

This is my first set of full sized cans.  I have Etymotic ER6i and ER4S.  Love them, but I wanted something with more bass presence and full sized over the ears.

I really, really, really want to love these things.  They're by far the most comfortable headphones I've ever worn.  The bass quality is perfect, I just need better balance between lows, mids, and highs.

I should note I'm not the firmest believer in burn in.  The only things I think it has some validity to it is stuff that moves - TT cartridges, speakers, and headphones.  Speakers benefit from it, but my experience tells me after a few hours or so I think it's more my ears getting used to what they're doing.

Am I way off with headphones here?   My Etys didn't need much, if any burn in. Maybe this is due to far smaller drivers?

Any insight is greatly appreciated.  If I'm hijacking, my apologies!

to answer your first question as succinctly as possible, No.

mine have a couple hundred hours on them

and they are still bass monsters.  the only way i get htem to not be bass monsters is to play them out of something that underpowers them. ie ipod or phone

if i want bassy electronic/rap or rock where i FEEL the bass drum and toms i use them.

if i want more detail and balance i use my 990/600s LOL

and they are not known to be balanced.

So basically these headphones arent meant for metal and rock ?

I want a comfort + closed headphone for metal and rock genre !!

Please help me . .

This is how I'm feeding mine. These things with a ModMic attached are just perfect for gaming.

Confused between these and Ultrasone HFI 780 and DJ1 pros

I'm not a massive metal fan but the highs seem prominent enough, not exactly a ton of sparkle though if that's your thing. As for low end the Beyers are more than capable. On the off chance you try them and they seem boomy, you'll want to pick up an amp with low output impedance and it'll tighten it all up like a screwdriver. They certainly are drivable off an iPod or a decent phone at higher volume, but I prefer it with an amp when I have the option. Not a problem if a friend wants to play me a track from whatever they've got on hand though, I haven't had that kind of issue so far.

If you're getting them for your first cans you won't be disappointed. There are very few cans that are both in this price range and drivable without an amp that compare to the 770 80ohm. The nice thing about getting them for your first pair is they're easy to add a ModMic and amp later on when you start getting the upgrade itch.

I may have heard the Ultrasones but if I have unfortunately I don't remember it, so can't do a comparison there.

I had the Ultrasone HFI-780 if I recall they had the bass quality where the HFI-580 had the bass amount.  The HFI-780  was very good For electronic music because of their bass.  I don't remember there sound signature fully as I haven't listen to them in a long time since i had them. The HFi-780 did req like 300 hours of burn in if you the type of person who believes in headphone burn in.

The Flaw of the HFI-780 was there headband denting into the top of your head.

So which one ?

Ultrasone HFI 780 or Beyers 770/80 for rock and metal ?

After reading everywhere that these are "bass monsters" and some people going as far as saying this is the most bass you'll get from a closed headphone, I have to say I'm pretty disappointed. These aren't bass monsters for me at all. Bass is there but lacks in impact I feel. The CAL's had more bass than these. The mids aren't as recessed as everyone says they are as well. Not all the time anyway which is weird. Some songs sound fine, others sound really distant. The soundstage is what I like most about this headphone. It's huge and makes my panasonic sound flat. Comfort is another disappointing thing. I find these really uncomfortable, the clamp is strong, and my head is really small. After 10 minutes I start feeling the pressure and after about half an hour I have to take them off.   

I came damn close to getting the DT 770 80 ohm from my local guitar center a couple weeks ago. I love their comfort and soundstage. After auditioning them side by side with  the ATH-M50, I found the DT 770's to be a little lacking in the highs. The better high frequency response out of the ATH-M50 immediately sold me. The DT 770 would be my second choice in a heartbeat, though.
