Sony MDR-CD570 - Earpiece pads/cusions disintegrating

This looks like the best place anywhere to post this, so hopefully I can get some help.

When I was young and crazy, I paid a ton of money for a set of headphones, they were the MDR-CD570.  I had no idea how much I would enjoy them or how great they would sound.  That was many years ago, and to this day I really enjoy them and they are worth every penny I paid for them.

Unfortunately, the earpiece pads/cushions are really falling apart.

I have searched all over trying to find replacement pads but I am striking out.  Can anyone put me in the right direction to find replacements or am I SOL?

Thanks in advance!

It looks like Sony doesn't have pads available for that model..maybe its time to get a new pair. IMO.

I am starting to think you are correct.  I was looking around for something that is a good replacement for them.  I am thinking that there are better choices out there for me anyway.  I mean...they are good...but I'd like the thoughts from those who are more experienced.

This may belong in another new thread...but since we are talking about it, here are my listening requirements...

  • Style - Hard rock/heavy metal/80's rock...not much for rap.  I do tend to listen on the loud side.  As mentioned, I am pretty happy with my CD570s
  • Usage - sitting at my computer, working and doing what you are doing right now.  :)
  • Equipment - very little.  Through my PC, Winamp with DFX plugin, through Logitech Z-2200, headphones plugged into the volume control.
  • Budget - Around $100 or so.  More only is absolutely necessary.
  • Prefer closed cup, but willing to hear advice and suggestions of other directions.  I can be taught.
  • Looking for the best value for the dollar for what I need.

I was looking at the Sennheiser HD448, the reviews are decent and they seem to fit the requirements.  What does everyone else think?  Could I stand to add an amplifier?

Thanks for the advice.

Just make some replacement pads. I used some pink antistatic closed cell polyethylene foam, about 10mm thick, cut to the shape of the  old pads then stuck on with double sided tape. The closed cell pads made a huge improvement in the bass.

Were you able to fix your headphone pads? I have the exact pair that i bought in 1998. The ear pads have disintegrated as well. The closed-cell foam padding idea doesn't sound half bad. Post pix if you have them. Thanks.

You really need a photo? The foam was just some waste packaging. I have now replaced it with white foam. While you have the pads off you could try removing the backs by removing the screws and stuff some acoustic wadding inside. Actually I may have used dressmakers padding! The phones have vents above and below the drivers so it can't hurt to damp the chamber a bit. I agree these are brilliant phones. I still prefer the bass on these to the bloated Sennheiser HD600s.

I contacted Sony--not available for online purchase.

"I am sorry to inform you that the replacement ear pads for the Headphone is not available for online purchase. However, you can contact our Parts and Accessories Team to check the availability of the replacement ear pads for the Headphone. They can be reached at : 1-239-768-7691 Working Hours: Mon - Fri 8:00AM - 12:00AM (Midnight) ET Sat - Sun 10:00AM - 9:00PM ET"

After a call and some digging around, the part number we're looking for is 497359401, but it's not made anymore and there's no stock.  These headphones came out in 1995 and they're pretty much done from Sony's perspective.  Which sucks, because I love these headphones too.

I plan on recruiting my wife to sew me a replacement...
