is this even possible...

Well during my computer class my teacher mentioned he was disposing of these old computers very soon, he also said that we could take anything we wanted from them. Being me i took a free mouse, then i noticed one of the computers had a little speaker on the bottom of the case. I took it out and wondered could i build headphones out of these things. I'm completely ill informed on the matter but i managed to get 2 of them.

My question is what to do with these things now ? Is the project even possible and what would i have to do now that i have this in my

those speakers are made to convey "beeps" and not much else. They are usually made of paper.  i cant imagine them sounding good at all.  I wouldnt waste your time unless you're going into the project knowing you're doing it just for the silliness of it.

are you sure they can only make beeps? They have magnets in them but do seem to have paperlike material under the copper enclosure  they do seem to be made of paper, if i did hypothetically make these things into headphones what would happen?

The sound quality would be ridiculous. Why bother.

Yes, that's all they are designed for, just to playback a single tone.

They'll work pretty well for a PC POST speaker. ksc75smile.gif  You could remove the magnets and use to hold notes on your refrigerator.

Yes, they'll play sound, but you most likely won't have much range out of them. Linear range, that is. You want a driver that plays 20Hz to 20kHz or better. My guess is that these might be OK from something like 800Hz to 3kHz or something. You won't enjoy headphones missing the lows and highs.

i didnt say "only" beeps, i just said that is their purpose in the computer.  they are not made to play music. - again.. they'd probably just sound like crap

Heck, I say do it, if you think it would be fun.  But hell if you want to see whether or not they would sound passable why not just hook them up to a source?  Would be easy wnough to just wire it into something like a CMoy temporarily.

It would be a tall order to ask a cmoy to drive an 8 ohm speaker.

Though.. honestly, does that really matter?

he isn't going to get good results either way... if he just wants to build something.. whether it works well or not seems irrelevant >_>

I'd agree.  Do it and the worst that will happen is that some chips will get overly hot and shut down driving too much current.
