LOD vs DAC vs what does it all mean?

Thread Starter

I'm using an iPhone 4 as my source, with Westone 4 IEM & I have a RSA Shadow on the way.  I also have all the parts to make my own LOD from the iPhone to the Shadow.  That will be my portable rig.

At home I listen from my Macbook & planned on making a mini-jack to mini-jack cable to connect to the Shadow.  I'm interested in a DAC although I'm not completely sure what that entails.  Are there any DAC out there that aren't already integrated into an amp?  Can I make my own with a DIY USB to mini-jack cable?  I'm not sure the engineering behind it all.

>> Normally the DAC and the amplifier are two seperated systems. To get more portable and to have a all in one solution there are as well integrated DAC/Amp combos.  I will give you a few days here reading through the threads and you are really confused how many stand alone DACs exist :)

Can I make my own with a DIY USB to mini-jack cable?

>>No problem so far but it needs enthusiasm and time :) There are also a lot of threads which are dealing with DIY..

I'm not sure the engineering behind it all.

>> Depends on you what you are willing to learn :)

the DAC in the iphone 4 and newer generation ipods already integrated is actually really nice as it is. the best/simplest thing might be to just make an LOD to feed a cleaner signal from your iphone to the shadow.
