CD: Dye, Scratches, Lifespan?

Hello smily_headphones1.gif

I have my all my discs in 'mint' condition: To, the best of my ability. All, play perfectly fine; Even, a disc, I accidentaly scratched... Somewhat, beyond, the light scratching - visible only within,  intense lighting.

Any way, I have noticed on some old or even new discs: The dye where the information is read is not perfectly proportioned. On most discs, this dye is perfectly symmetrical. Like, perfect layers of circles. The 'defective' discs (Are they defective!!!?) have bends or wedges all bent off place, on the dye.

Although, the CD plays excellent now...

Is this a flaw? Should I be concerned for the future of these discs?

It is somewhat alarming, only because on rare CDs; I see, how a copy of that CD, is ridiculously expensive... As it is out of print.

And within the last concern, how will scratching a CD, in general affect the lifespan?

And for the EXTREMELY RARE discs: Am I doomed to unexpectedly, eventually, soon... Loose them?

What is the lifespan of a CD, if it is nicely taken care of?

Has anyone had, a properly taken care of disc; Just, flat out, stop working?

I have a 'Chandos' CD, printed on 1983 - That, looks as good or better... Than some of my new discs. Maybe, nobody knows.

Thanks, for reading. ANY help appreciated.

there is a very simple solution here.. copy your disks and store the copies.  every once in a while, make new copies,

or just rip them to lossless.

you can always copy again, or turn lossless files into wav and burn another cd.

My first CD was a copy of DSoTM that I bought in '87. Still have it and it still plays fine.

Though I agree about ripping to lossless. I need to get busy doing that to the rest of my collection.

Thank you all smily_headphones1.gif

Personally, I never imagined the compact disc as vulnerable media. But, several Internet articles state otherwise. Afterall, I will use the advice; And rip the files uncompressed unto my computer. Supplemented via some external hard or flash drives.

I bought my first CD player when they announced "There are now 100 titles available on CD"...yes, a very, very long time ago and I still have some of those first CD's. I now own over 400 titles (new and used) and have NEVER had a CD fail.

I've only had a couple of CDs degrade on me, these from 1985.
