Virgin DIYer, need help with first project.

Please help me understand this diagram.  I really want to learn how to build this, just for the heck of learning.
 
I don't understand the lower right thing on the diagram.  Is it a female headphones jack or a volume pot?  Since this is a mono diagram, how does both connect to the female headphones jack?

The diagram shows three resistors, a double pole/double throw switch and a headphone jack.

Diagrams are often drawn showing only one channel with the understanding that the other

channel is identical. This drawing just shows the left channel.

On the headphones jack, one lead goes to ground the other goes to "R" and the resistors.  Why is there a break in the line and what is "R"?

For me it would be logical that the R means the right channel?? When I am right you can see the left one the right one and the "housing" is the sleeve in this case which is grounded
