Help with desktop speakers and future setup

Hey all,

For a few years now I've been using my Logitech Z-680's....they held up really well but just havnt been using the 5.1 setup on them and I'm looking to upgrade to something for "audiophile" like. I have my eyes on the Audioengine 5's. My only concern making the purchase and having everything to use them for the best sound possible.

I have an HT-OMEGA Claro+ sound card: http://www.htomega.com/claroplus.html

To be honest...I didnt know what most of the sound cards features were until I found this website a few months back, and I still dont know how some of these will work out.

I know the sound card has an OPAMP and it works great with my 555's....and I also see it has a DAC as well as 24bit/192kz output ability, but to what abilities...I'm not too sure.

Since the sound card has the 1/8th jacks on the back...this will be ok for hooking up the A5's directly to the F/R speaker jack correct?  And this cable comes with the speakers if I remember?  If this is correct, my next question would be, if I decide to add a SUB later on...does it have to be self powered, and connected to the back on the speakers, or would the speakers themselves deliver power to the sub?

Also, later on I was thinking about getting a desktop AMP/DAC.....since the sound card already has both (i'm assuming from the sound cards info page) will the speakers, and my headphones still benefit from a desktop version?  And what is the main difference between the versions built directly onto the sound card and a standalone desktop version, other than directly plugging in your headphones to it?

Sorry for all the questions...I'd just really like to know as much as possible before I make my purchase....thank you all in advance for your comments!!

Can anyone fill me in with some information about this setup, or if there would be something you would/wouldnt do?

I upgraded from some Cambridge Soundworks MegaWorks THX surrounds a few years ago to the M-Audio BX5a. Our paths are similar, but I went to an external audio interface (Apogee Duet) at the same time as I got the monitors. I am pretty sure that you will find the A5s to be a nice upgrade from the Z-680s. One thing that is often overlooked is speaker placement. The A5s will give you some options and challenges if you have a small work space.

Because you are accustomed to headphones, you may want to position the A5s like speaker monitors: equidistant between each speaker and you (forming an upside down equilateral triangle with you at the "bottom" apex) with nothing blocking line of sight from the speakers to your head. Positioned this way, you would ideally want the speakers at the same height as your head. I would recommend some speaker pads. I have no idea if you are going to like the sound of the A5s positioned this way, and you may want to consider a more conventional speaker placement.

The manual should help with more conventional placement, and with any placement restrictions. For example (and I don't know about the A5s), some speakers sound best if they are kept two to three feet away from walls. The manuals should also help with cable setup, and you should be able to download them for review before you buy.

I recall that Audioengine has a powered sub that should be a good match to the A5s, but I am not an expert and that is an assumption on my part. Sorry.
