Interesting discussion then.  So in "layman's terms" am I to assume that the output of the Marantz is of less quality compared to a dedicated headphone amp of a similar value? (£100 - £200)

No. Whatever gave you that idea.

not having heard a PM6003, i cant say if its gonna be pawn'd by a similarly priced 'dedicated' opamp but i wouldnt even bet a lousy penny on it happening though.

OTOH go visit the vintage amp/receiver thread & pick almost any vintage amp or receiver bandied about over em thar hills & i will bet more than a pretty dollar than they'll use a low priced dedicated to wipe asses with! deadhorse.gif

You know, I just read your post twice and I still have no idea what you said. I'm sure it's my fault, but...could you translate into English that's a little less, er, "hip"? Don't forget you're writing to a worldwide audience, some of whom have English as a second language.

Who are you referring to pp312?

I realize it's pretty low end on the line, but I have a Marantz 1601 and I don't care for the HP amp at all.  I would never pick it over the mappletree that sits right beside it.
