Ultrasone PRO 900 to Denon D5000?

I can't get my mind off the Denon D5000 because I keep thinking that it could be better than my Ultrasone PRO 900. I definitely like the PRO 900 and it has really great bass, but it's just not "floating my boat" compared to all my other headphones (and it's also the most expensive one I own!). I know I want to have at least one closed headphone for portable use with good emphasis on bass because all my other headphones are more lean on bass. I had the ATH-M50, and it was good but there was nothing special about it to me so I sold it. The bass is definitely special on the PRO 900, but I'm not a basshead and I love the sound of open headphones, so I'm beginning to think any closed headphone won't satisfy me. I have to at least have one and it's come down to the PRO 900 or D5000 (or others? if there are any out there that can compete). I also tried the Kees mod, but only put different combinations of electric tape on the 3 holes which really didn't do much for me. I did not open it up to put felt and cotton on the wall of the cup, is that the most important part of the mod? If the D7000 was about the price of the PRO 900 then I would definitely give that a try, but it's not. So for the people who has heard both, which one do you like better and why? Thanks!

My journey went like this, D5000 -> DX-1000 -> Pro900 could not be happier :)

That's one for the PRO 900! Thanks. Is it with mods or without?

With felt mod and j$ denon pads

d5000! put somthing between the pads and the driver.. making it further from your ears.. u will notice quite a difference.. the j$ pads are a little hard.. prefer the stock ones

The felt mod covering the holes or inside on the cup? Or both?

inside on the cup, just one actually. i tried two but lost alot of air and left only one round felt.

The two headphones have such a different signature; you would end up missing your old ones after a while. The D5000 would be more basshead-ish.

Thanks Nach, I'll try that with my PRO 900 soon.

Really? I heard the PRO 900 had more bass, or maybe that is against the D7000. Well it seems like I'll be keeping my PRO 900. smile.gif

The PRO900 has much better mids IMO, while the D5k was more boom-tish.

That's good to know! I love my mids, and since the PRO 900 has better mids then I'm definitely going to stick with that over the D5000.

I don't know about the D5000, but I think the Pro900 and D7000 are more similar than they are different.

Similar except in price. tongue_smile.gif I would take the PRO 900 any day then.

Well yeah except price! It depends what you are after, the D7000 offers more of a refined sound overall I feel. But the Pro900 to me excels with electronic music.

To be honest though, I game online with my Pro900s more than I listen to music through them. When combined with dolby headphone they are great for locating enemies by audio cues like footsteps and gunfire. Sort of an aural wall hack.biggrin.gif

..hmm actually I simply couldn't relate Denons to Ultrasones..

Never compared their tonal balances but the presentations are just way too different to me, I enjoy one but just couldn't do so for another.

I'd suggest its always better to try listen if possible==
