Newbie help: complete vinyl system <$1000

Hey I'm fairly new to quality sound and everything involved.

I have done some homework and have some ideas as to what would be easy to find and would fit in my budget, but I would appreciate your opinions.

What vinyl system can you recommend that will give me the best, clearest sound for under $1000?

* I dislike internet shopping.

* My taste in music is irrelevant at the moment because I listen to pretty much every genre as I am trying all types of music.

* I have almost no understanding of what audio components are compatible

* The system will be in my office which is a quiet room, carpet floor and plaster walls 2m high 4x4 wide with strange angles, ie not perfect square (room info provided in case sound from speakers is affected by this)

* I live in Australia, near the Gold Coast

* budget may be up to 200-ish over, but only for for a very very good reason.

These are my current ideas for my entry level system:

turntable > speaker amp with phono input > speakers

or

turntable > pre-amp > headphone amp > headphones

I cannot decide whether I should go with headphones or speakers..

I gone vinyl recently, depending on your used market you should be able to fit nicely under $1k. Personally, I like the sound of vinyl over speakers, it's easier ignore the random pops and clicks. A good receiver will have a nice headphone jack if you decided to use headphones.

Here's my setup all used equipment, all prices are in USD but right now USD and AUD are pretty close.

Vintage Marantz 2265B receiver $300 (vintage receivers have phono input so no pre-amp needed)
Technics SL-1200mk2 $200
Orthofon 2m Red Cart $100 (this was new)
HiVi Swan M1.2 speakers $220

The rest you can spend on vinyl cleaning supplies.

Do you have something similar to Audiogon or the Canuck Audio Mart down under?

If so, buy used. Always buy used. I bought my turntable systems off Audiogon and saved over 50% from retail, while getting gear in wonderful condition.

I have to recommend what I started with, which was a used Rega Planar 3. I was very happy with it and brought it in for about $600 with a cartridge and phonostage (NAD PP2).

I can't find a good way to get quality second hand audio gear here on the coast, the only shops I have available to me are:

* JBhifi

* Atlantis Music (very good record/CD store that stocks Pro-Ject turntables)

* random stores that have records

* Harvey Norman (generic large electronic store)

* high quality home theatre system store (stocks high quality speakers and amps, but no turntables and is very expensive)

But I'm constantly on the lookout, and I'm going to be in Sydney for three days tomorrow so I can have a look down there as well.

Yeah francisdemarte, I think I'll go with speakers for now, and get good headphones later after more research.

Buying used is good advice though Unkle Erik, I'll make some calls and see what I can find, and then ask you guys on the value of systems I find.

Thanks for your advice guys.

At the moment this is what I can do easily:

Pro-Ject Essential turntable ($300-ish) > Sherwood RX4109 with phono in ($250) > Dali concept 1 bookshelf speakers ($450)

Although not sure about the Sherwood receiver.

Will this provide good quality sound?

Is it good value?

For $450 on speakers maybe look at some of the vintage klipsche heresy speakers. Just stay on the lookout as I am sure someone in Australia will be selling a pair at some point.

Good luck.
