Garage Sale? :O GET!

Being fairly new to audio and fairly young-ish (24) I never really heard a true "boombox" until today when I picked up a Hitachi TRK-3D88W for $5 at a garage sale.  I purchased it with the intent to open it up and destroy it... taking all the parts I could salvage and dumping the defeated husk.  But it would be a wasted opportunity if I didn't plug it in and take a listen, right?  Besides, I had to browse the short wave 1 and 2 bands and the medium wave band.  Just to see what's there!

Honestly, the thing sounds pretty cool!  Definitely a fun sounding set of speakers.  I get a laugh out of the idea of dubbing a good DubStep track onto an old cassette tape and talking down the street with this thing.  It really kicks.  Anyway, as much pause as this gave me before taking it apart... it cannot escape it's fate.

But when I cracked it open I found all this goopy crap inside!  What is this?  I don't see any signs of a busted cap (not that I'm an expert) and since the box works a treat I guess this goopy crap hasn't destroyed it.  Just really not sure what it is.  Thought I'd share the find with you all and ask if anyone had any ideas.  lol

I don't know the answer to your particular question, but you may find what you're looking for over at stereo2go.com ...  it's a forum specializing in old boomboxes and walkmans.

It's probably somekind of glue. My marantz pm7003 has also got somekind of goopy crap on it's transformer.

It looks like some sort of glue, it's normally used on circuit boards to hold things in place like hdmi ports etc.
