Cypher Labs Solo - iPod Battery Drain

Thread Starter

It might be useful and informative to collect some experiences.

 Here's mine:
 - iPod and Solo fully charged.
 - iPod Classic (2009), bought a year ago.
 - files: *.m4a (converted from FLAC to AAC, with Nero encoder). Quality: VBR, estimated bit rate 425Kbps
 - iPod volume set to minimum
 - Backlight set to 5 seconds (but hardly relevant as no interaction occured)
 - Test: a long playlist was selected, no further interactions.

 Result:
 6 hours 30 minutes < battery life < 7 hours

While the audio quality of the Solo is really excellent (!!), the decrease of the iPod's battery life is an issue.
I don't expect more than 5 hours in real life usage (switching between tracks, playlists, scrolling).

The best possible explanation I read until now, was the assumption, that it could be the Apple authentication chip within the iPod, which uses such a (crazy) amount of power to allow for digital output.

It would also be interesting to read results from someone who uses the newest version of an iTouch.

Yesterday, after changing my iPod settings... volume limit to 0, and backlight to minimum (2 seconds)... I got around 5 1/2 hours of listening with the Solo.

Guys we are seeing play times that vary quite a bit especially with HDD based ipods some people are getting 20 hours and a few 5 or 6. I am using a Nano and it will 100% of the time exceed the play time of the Solo. If your getting really low play times on your ipod the battery might be needed to be changed. The Solo does not draw off the ipods battery.

Ken

1. If in my "iPod the battery might be needed to be changed", then I would observe a decrease in battery life also when using the Classic without the Solo. I definitely don't experience this. This iPod has 15 charging cycles at most.

2. "...The Solo does not draw off the ipods battery..." I know. This was said more than once. I don't doubt it.

So if it's not a worn out iPod battery and not the Solo which draw off the iPods battery it must be something else... I suggest to read (carefully) the assumption in my original post.

I concur with townes findings and my classic 7th G is pretty new.

Ken - can you make me a cable that can charge and listen to the ipod/solo combo at the same time. I can then add an external battery pack and solve the Ipod low batt issue. I am aiming at 24 hrs.

Thanks in advance.

I don't think there's anything wrong with my iPod Classic's battery... it was purchased new, concurrently with the Solo/RxMKII combo. To make sure, I did an overnight test, running my fully charged Classic without the solo (I selected music-->songs), connected to my Beyer T50p phones at minimal volume. In the morning (after about 8-9 hours), there was still nearly a quarter of battery life remaining. So there must be something else going on when it's connected to the Solo.

I am having the same issue on my iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iTouch, and iPod Nano.  I will try the Solo again with my iPad V2....

I am having the same problem with a new iPod Touch and a newer classic. I do not think the Solo is draining the battery. I think it is safe to say that the iPod is using more power to communicate and work with the solo. Small price to pay for such amazing sound.

Seems this would be an issue for Apple one I doubt they will take up.

If you are going on long trip you can always top up the iPod battery with one of those travel batteries used to charge iPhones, iPads and PowerBooks. I believe they are called hyper Mac.

It's an option. I just did a 10 hour flight. iPod touch and a classic in tow smily_headphones1.gif

That is exactly my initial thought of using an external batt pack like the enigizer xp8000 to charge the amp, solo and the ipod. Unfortunately the ipod cannot be charge without removing the USB connection to the solo. Was thinking if Ken would make a split connection via the usb data cable just for the power. Ie. the usb data cable got split into 2 wire - one going to the solo and the other to wall power outlet or external batt pack if one prefer portability. Similar to the iwadia transport but on a portable level.

If such cable exist - then the solo is going to blow all competitors dock (including the iwadia) out of the water. The Solo will be a world class ipod transport that serve as a home base & mobile system.

I am not sure what DAC they used in Solo but it sound as good or better than my Nova ESS 9006 Sabre Dac with the Iwadia home base system & My IMOD 240gb portable combo. Good work.

Hi

this post seems to have died off without a solution being found. the suggestion of a split connection - if feasible - seems ideal. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be any response from Ken at ALO. Is it possible this young discussion has moved on to another forum?

This thread has died because the issue was addressed in the main CLAS thread.

1) The CEO of Cypher Labs confirmed that iPods and iPhones burn more battery power during USB communifcation which is what shortens battery life compared to using them as stand-alone music players. There is nothing that Cypher Labs can do to change this since it is on the Apple side of the connection.

2) There doeas not seem to be any way to create a cable that can both communicate wth the CLAS and charge the iPod/iPhone at the same time. This is unfortunate but it is what it is. (If someone could make one, there would be a good market for it.)

Thanks for that, I suspected something of the sort but its nice to have it confirmed. I appreciate you taking the time to clarify things.
