Current King of Gaming Headphones - Page 2

There can't be a king, as everyone likes something else and all the top-tier-headphones are great... well, most of them. How can you choose between a T1, HD800, LCD2, HE6, 4070, O2 (etc) without listening? Just throw a dice (I doubt any of these will disappoint), or get him to a meet for some first-hand experience.

Or is the plan to have him spend less than $1500?

I will assume you use the T1's for gaming. I have heard the 770/80, is great for gaming but its sound staging is not perfect. I would not question the clarity will be much better on the T1's. But is the pinpoint accuracy as good as say the a700s, or 701's, which I hear are unmatched in that regard.

Edit: To Paaj - I know all headphones sound different. I have a pair of HE-6's and LCD-2's myself. While I understand people prefer one sound signature over the other, and personal preference is important. Since I am looking for the ultimate gaming can, my first priority is pinpoint sound placement while using the Dolby Headphone. I want amazing clarity and refinement to come along for the ride, but imaging being the number one concern. I will give an example that will hopefully clarify my point. Lets take my HE-6's, amazing headphones. Now if I play Uncharted with them, I can get a sense of where people are, but not down to the exact spot, just a general direction. And these headphones cost $1200. The A700's from what I read, can pick out the difference in someones placement between 10:00, and 10:10 lets say, and they cost under $100. So what top tier can, has the accuracy to that level, but with a substantially elevated overall sound quality.

Get the Sennheiser MX980 earbuds, The AD700 or any number of other popular gaming headphones.   There are two types of gaming headphones: sets that have great pinpoint accuracy, meaning sounds that are live and always changing will appear in the correct position relative to your head or ears.  Their soundstage is just 1 dimensional compared to the expensive sets, however, on that flat plane of audio your ears pick up, X sound or gunshot will be picked up more accurately than even some of the big name expensive sets.  Why?  I really dont know, maybe it has to do with the lack of a deep sound stage, the ears pick up on sounds more accurately and can place them easier on a flat soundscape as found in the AD700 ( compared to the T1, the ad700 stage has almost no depth lol )

The other type are sets that recreate a natural or vast experience.  They place YOU in the most accurate position.  The HD800 and T1 have large soundstages that are stretched, but incredibly dynamic and 3 dimensional.  This is not good for accurate live sounds inside games that need pinpoint accuracy like Call of Duty online.  I owned the T1 and I would never use it to play COD.  It did not place sounds in the games soundstage the right way.  I couldn't pick up where exactly that sound came from, was that more to my left, or closer to my center? ect ect

however, the expensive sets are amazing for games that dont require pinpointing, games like Dead Space.  The t1 and dead space was the most amazing audio experience I've ever had.  Just astounding because the ambiance of the game, the overall feel and presence did not rely on knowing exactly where that one sound just came from.  So, for games like that, The Hd800 and T1 are amazing, but for Pinpointing, go with the MX980 or the AD700.

Thank you very much, that was extremely useful.

I believe my friend is going with the AD700's and the Mixamp. I was thinking about also buying a pair just for fun, but I think I am going to hold off. I really want a Smyth Realiser. I figure with that I can just use one of my current sets of cans. I have to scrap the money together before next semester starts and I quit my job, so I don't need to be throwing away money on a short term pair of headphones.
