Cerwin-Vega VS 100 pair + a receiver for $40 a good deal?

A guy locally is selling a pair of Cerwin-Vega VS 100 tower speakers and a Pioneer VSX-21 receiver all for $40. Supposedly the foam for the subwoofer are decaying/need to refoamed the speakers are something like 3 years old. I'm going to listen to them tomorrow. So my questions are 

 

1. What do these items normally go for? It seems awfully low for a receiver and a pair of speakers.....

 

2. Anything in particular I should look at if the said speakers work? (Something that could be wrong with them even if they work)

 

3. Normally are these a decent set of speakers/ how's the build quality. (they look really good in the pictures)

 

Thanks for your time guys/gals this will be my first venture into the speaker realm a cheap one albeit. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

1. This is a good combination for rock music.

2. When checking speakers try to hear all dynamics (woofers and tweeters) - locate your ear near dynamic and hear it. If there are no noise or something else - ok. Also try speakers on high volume.

 

But don't expect more from this speakers - its good for rock, punchy but no more.

When you will listen speakers try music that you like/usually listen.

First I'd like to say thanks for responding Chs177!

 

After talking with the seller and doing some research it turns out the only problem with the speakers was they need to be refoamed. At that time the seller had used electrical tape as a "temporary surround" so I couldn't turn the volume up to high in fear of ruining the subs. From what little I did hear before buying and dismantling sounded genuinely amazing compared to the no mids and bloated bass of the logitech z2300's (I know I know.....) that I own.

 

I did take your advice into consideration and feel as though if the refoaming turns out well then this buy was quite outstanding.
