I see a lot of headphone amp/dac combos, but I intend to use this mainly on my desktop and I already have a dedicated sound card

The line out from that is supposed to be higher quality already, so wouldn't spending money on a dac on top of an amp be redundant? Or are the dac/amp combos better as standalone units, whatever your source?
I want to get the best quality amp I can to drive my headphones, and so I want as much of the resources to go towards the amp as possible. (i.e. 100 dollars to spend on speakers is usually better spent on a higher quality 2.0 system than an equivalent 2.1 system as far as sound quality goes as less resources are pumped into the subwoofer and taking money away from the satellites and better components there)
Finite resources require a sort of triage for best effect, so I come to you all to pool your collected wisdom on the best course.
