I dunno, I've never worn the Pros and never heard the 990s. You could ask here maybe -> http://www.head-fi.org/forum/thread/513393/guide-sonic-differences-between-dt770-dt990-models-more

Thanks for review OP! Couple questions for Q701 owners...
1. Is Little Dot MKIII enough to get "most" out of it?
2. I prefer my KRK RP6G2's over both HD580 and DT770 250...quite a bit more actually. The Rokit's sound's significantly more immersive for me due to their detail. Hmm...actually not a question...late, sleep, haha!

1. yes
2. indeed this is no question.
With the E10 as my DAC/amp, do you guys recommend me to splurge on a set of AKG Q701's or to opt for a cheaper pair of headphones such as the Brainwavz HM5?
I have read online that the impedance of the Q701 is 62ohms and 64ohms for the HM5... actually, I don't quite have a full understanding of what this means... I would appreciate it if somebody could explain to me the relationship between the E10's power output numbers and these impedance numbers and how you're able to tell if the E10 is suitable or not to power these headphones. :o
Yes, it will I think. Maybe. Supposedly the KRK KNS-8400 sounds similar to their speakers and i've found the Q701 and 8400 to have a LOT of similarities.
If you can demo the KRK KNS-8400 at a local Guitar Center and like it, chances are you will like the Q701.
8400 has less mid-bass, perhaps more sub-bass and maybe smoother treble (when well amped).
I think the 8400 is comparable to the Q701. If I wanted a headphone that's closed, the 8400 would do the trick for me.
The only reason I'd take the Q701 over the 8400 is that it's open and a little more forgiving.
EDIT: Wow, hate it when I accidentally reply to messages posted weeks ago.
Haha, it's cool bro. I wound up taking the Q701's back. They were extremely painful on my head and I just couldn't seem to stretch them out enough. I also found myself a bit fatigued by their sonics. Something about vocals came across a little unnatural too. Finally, they really did lack the low end impact and I'm sure that's what made them harder to listen for extended periods.
I picked up the Beyer DT880 Pro 250 Ohm's, but was dissappointed w/ them as well. They just didn't sound that much better than my HD580's and certainly not as good as the Q701's. They did share the Q701's penchant for noggin' lovin' though! Ouch! So I ordered the DT880 Premium 600 Ohm's this morning and $3.99 later they came in the afternoon from Amazon, lol! Wow, what a difference!
-MUCH less pressure
-ears do not touch fabric covering the driver in the muff, Pro's touched all over the place
-soundstage MUCH bigger than Pro
-low end has layers...texture
-high end less sloppy/sibilant
-cord is straight and long
I see the music w/ the Premiums, the Pro's were heard, not seen, and not felt. I'm very surprised how different they sound as well as being able to finally hear a high ohm phone and see what all the hubbub's been about. :D
Compared with k701 and q701 they don't sound the same but it isn't a light year in terms of difference.
I have heard both.
