Filenames with quotation marks [yes I know these aren't the tech forums...]

Thread Starter

I was renaming some of my files on my Macbook and I noticed that I have a few old school files with quotation marks in the filename. When I tried to open them with Word 2011, it said the files did not have a valid filename.

e.g.: "To Kill a Mockingbird" Study Questions 1.doc

On a Windows computer, can filenames with quotation marks exist? I'm assuming Word 2011 won't let me open my files due to compatibility issues with a Windows running machine...

Opening the files in Textedit or NeoOffice work just fine however.

Thanks for any feedback.

Traditionally on computers any non-alphanumeric character other than a dash, underscore or full-stop (and others, depending on the system) were special characters and interpreted by the system, so couldn't exist in file names. Out of habit I still wont use these characters when naming files. Regardless, file names don't have to be grammatically correct. wink.gif
