Cary Audio SLI 80 - Owners Unite! - Page 11

I don't know how many of you saw this post on the Cary Audio Facebook page. One Audio enthusiast ordered a souped up SLI-80. Here are the specs and the pictures during its assembly. Very cool!

I read through that.  Now that is a custom build!

Interesting color choice for the custom paint job. That bronze is fairly subtle. It looks sharp. Those VCaps are something too!

Anyone tried the Sophia 274B in the SLI-80? They are so big, they will touch eachother. Is that gonna be an issue? Sophia says they have happy SLI80 customers, and it is confirmed that they will have to lean on eachother. Whart do you think?

I have never used a Sophia in any amp. The Mesh plates would be gorgeous in the dark. Since the Rectifiers have purportedly the least impact on sound they could just be great eye candy.

Is that in general or specific for the SLI80?

In my Woo WA22 I find the rectifier the most sound alerting tube..

SLI-80 specifically. Based solely on what I have been reading. The Rectifier was definitely a player in my Decware.

Don't do it This tube looks nice but is very week tube the SLI-80 will toast it in no time.

If you buy it direct from Sophia they will ask what amp you will be using it in before they sell

it to you. And won't sell it to you if you have a demanding amp.

Over priced junk.

OK, just considering it since I got a local offer of half price on 1 month old tribes.

Sophia says they have several sli80 owners thats been using the tubes fir 3 years without problems, however.

What are good and cheap rectifiers for the sli80?

Thanks Glenn. I enjoy listening, but the math of speaker and tube combos is NOT my arena. :D

I am using a pair of Philips 5R4GYS that I bought form Upscale Audio. Price was decent and I like them with the SLI-80 so far.

I thought you also used the 596 ?

So if you like the 5R4 why go to the Sophia other then it looks cool .

The 5R4 has the highest voltage drop of the 5 volt rectifiers Maybe the Sophia has a higher voltage drop.

I sold off all but one of my 596's. Frank I is going to use them in his WA5. The only one I have left is the one Clayton graciously awarded me for the 5000'th post. I would have 2 but one I shipped to Frank was damaged and I am making his order whole with the last tube I would sell. No way I am selling the one Clayton sent me! So I am 596less while I search for another one to pair up. I do have my trusty 2359Glenn adapters waiting another 596...;)

I do have a pair of SovTek 5U4G's that came with the SLI-80 when I bought it. Other than the 596, do you have a fun rectifier recommendation for the SLI-80?

Maybe the RK-60 looks cool and is cheep still really only Clayton and Lieven hane them so far..
