Advice on choosing in-ear buds or full-size headphones.

Hello,

I have been researching this for about a week now and this seems the most likely place to get a straight-forward answer.

I am in the market for some audio devices to listen to my music through my ipod. I've become annoyed with my ipod earbuds since I have to keep readjusting them to stay in my ear. I'm usually listening to music while walking to campus, working-out, or just at home. I've looked into full-size headphones which seem great since they can deliver wide ranges and seem like they would be good for walking and listening to music at home. I've looked into the Dr.Dre Beat headphones (bad idea) and seeing that price for a product that seems to break very consistently definately does not seem worth it.

I'm not to sure about price-point yet though seeing as if I want a decent pair of phones that will last 2 or more years I need to look in the range from as little as $100 to around $250.

I'd be listening mostly to mp3s and just watching movies (avi.s what have you) and I'd like something that is portable if possible. Isolation isn't a big issue but it would be nice to have some for when watching movies.

What are good suggestions for headphones? and what are good suggestions for earbuds? Is one much better than the other?

Does anyone have some advice for a novcie audiophile?

$250 will get you some very nice IEMs.  If you just want one really nice headphone/IEM and you plan to be outdoors/in public that's what I advise.

The Isolation cannot be touched by any full sized and typically a good IEM will give you extremely good FR performance. I wish I had a FS can that did as well accross the whole spectrum as my TF10's.  The trade-off is soundstage.

If you do go with an IEM, it's not a bad idea to get one with a detachable cable.  It makes replacing your cable n the event it gets damaged trivial.  But if you're IEM has a permanently attached cable and needs replacing you're in for a headache or some serious money lost (or both).

Welcome to Head-Fi and good luck!
