Forget televised news. I wrote off all of it in '99. I remember turning on the national nightly news and the lead story was some celebrity wedding. Though I'd heard stories like that before, that day it triggered rage. Rage in the form of an angry glare at the TV set, which I then turned off. I think I went downstairs to work on the truck for awhile which made me happy.
That led to ditching cable and I didn't even have a TV set until a couple months ago, when I bought a new flatscreen (love it!) for watching movies.
Anyhow, I get most of my news online. I like Google's news aggregator and especially love how you can easily find related articles from hundreds or thousands of different sources.
I also love NPR. Very, very little celebrity coverage. (For the record, nothing against celebs. I just don't give a rip about their personal lives.) There's hard news, investigation and some thoughtful analysis (not as good since Daniel Schorr died) but still good. People complain about their slant, but it's pretty transparent and you won't find any tinfoil hat rants. I also like the BBC quite well.
For some real fun, pick up a shortwave. Spin the dial and you'll find all sorts of interesting international broadcasts. You'll turn up propaganda stations and other interesting stuff. I don't know if the mysterious number counters are still out there (just someone reading a list of numbers. No one is quite sure why, but they might be coded messages to spies.) bu there's much of interest. If you have a radio with broad reception, you might also pull in the local airport's radio traffic, police, fire, and much else. Also in there are news broadcasts in English.
When I lived in the middle of nowhere, one of the things that kept me sane was dialing in the BBC on a 1939 GE console radio. It was a reminder that a more civilised part of the world existed. As one of the jokes went about the place I lived, it was where "every day is a monster truck rally." I'd love to list the more off-color jokes and especially the turkey story, but this is a family website.
