Uneditiorized News...Where Can I Get it?

Are there any cable news channels that offers news in a uneditorialzed way?  It seems all the majors are starting to be just another quasi-news entertainment show.

I miss the days (and I don't think it wasn't that long ago) where newscasters reported the news, and that was it.  The local news seems to still adhere to this philosophy, but I just don't get that from the 24-hour major news networks.

Where do you get the kind of news where you get to form your own opinion without it being shoved down the throat for you?

Cheers.

NPR, Public Radio does the best job IMO. The 24 hour news programs have to editorialize, It's the only way to fill the 24 hours. I've always thought News programs should be variable length. On days when there was a lot of news they could probably fill a half-hour maybe even an hour. But on slow news days 10 minutes might be enough. It's hard to believe that there's 60 minutes of worthy news every day to fill a 60 minute news program.

Forget televised news. I wrote off all of it in '99. I remember turning on the national nightly news and the lead story was some celebrity wedding. Though I'd heard stories like that before, that day it triggered rage. Rage in the form of an angry glare at the TV set, which I then turned off. I think I went downstairs to work on the truck for awhile which made me happy.

That led to ditching cable and I didn't even have a TV set until a couple months ago, when I bought a new flatscreen (love it!) for watching movies.

Anyhow, I get most of my news online. I like Google's news aggregator and especially love how you can easily find related articles from hundreds or thousands of different sources.

I also love NPR. Very, very little celebrity coverage. (For the record, nothing against celebs. I just don't give a rip about their personal lives.) There's hard news, investigation and some thoughtful analysis (not as good since Daniel Schorr died) but still good. People complain about their slant, but it's pretty transparent and you won't find any tinfoil hat rants. I also like the BBC quite well.

For some real fun, pick up a shortwave. Spin the dial and you'll find all sorts of interesting international broadcasts. You'll turn up propaganda stations and other interesting stuff. I don't know if the mysterious number counters are still out there (just someone reading a list of numbers. No one is quite sure why, but they might be coded messages to spies.) bu there's much of interest. If you have a radio with broad reception, you might also pull in the local airport's radio traffic, police, fire, and much else. Also in there are news broadcasts in English.

When I lived in the middle of nowhere, one of the things that kept me sane was dialing in the BBC on a 1939 GE console radio. It was a reminder that a more civilised part of the world existed. As one of the jokes went about the place I lived, it was where "every day is a monster truck rally." I'd love to list the more off-color jokes and especially the turkey story, but this is a family website. smily_headphones1.gif

I enjoy FSRN, if only because they only present relevant and important news, and have never once uttered the words "royal wedding" or "anna nicole smith" in their entire broadcast history.  It is a conglomerate of freelance reporters, which gives it a completely different perspective from any other news source out there.  I'd definitely check it out if I were you.

No such thing anymore I dont think :( If you can get the BBC out there then maybe give that a chance. Itll be world news though not US focused.

NPR is great. I love the local station (WGBH). They always give straight news, and then throw in some interesting stories that aren't really news, but still educational/informative.

And yes, the number stations. UVB 76 is still pretty active. That's the only one I know about. Creepy stuff blink.gif

I'm surprised more people here don't have good multiband receivers. They're cheaper than a lot of sources and most do a spectacular job with AM and FM. Plus you get a world's worth of international broadcasts. No subscriptions or costs beyond the radio and antenna, either.

El Doug - thanks for the tip on FSRN. Hadn't heard of it before, but I bookmarked it and will be tuning in.

I googled Multiband Recceivers and found a bewildering range of prices and specs. Could you point me in the right direction?
