Hey guys,
So in a week or so I was going to buy the Audio Technica ATH-M50 (Straight Cable)
The only problem is that the cable is over 10 feet long (I know there is a coiled version but it's ugly to be honest) so I heard that I could solder the cable.
Now I've never done this before, is it recommended that a first-timer shouldn't do this?? I watched videos/read tutorials on how to do this, and it looks fairly simple, just the fact that I haven't done it before worries me. I was also planning to try it on some old apple headphones or something first to get the hang of it.
Do I need to replace the connector (the thing that plugs into the iPod, sorry for my lack of headphone terms haha) or just use the same one? If I don't need to replace it I'm fine with that, but if I do can someone recommend a good one I can find at radioshack/frys (not too expensive please).
So the way I was planning to do it was
1. Cut the cable (Do I need to cut it a specific way or just cut it with scissors?)
2. Remove the insulation, then half an inch of insulation of the smaller wires. Also put heat shrinks on the smaller and main cable. (How do you do this? I just used scissors and tried not to cut too far in but bad idea I know)
3. Put the matching cables next to each other then solder. (Do I need to twist the matching cables?)
4. Heat up the heat shrinks as I solder the wires.
5. Finally heat up the heat shrink on the main cable
If I missed some details, or I'm doing it wrong PLEASE let me know, as I said this is my first time.
Also, do I need to buy a certain solder iron? I was just going to buy some 4 dollar one at frys.
