This was the main thing I was thinking when I saw that post. It's difficult to get razor flat response into sub-bass from an open dynamic driver.

Quote:Quote:Quote:If you amp the 011's like hell, my vintage JVC JA-S10 (20w each channel @ 8ohms integrated amp), +1 gain, + 1 on bass and no gain on treble it sounds arguably similar to the LCD2's, hell I own both and I couldn't even tell a difference if I listen to every track very analytically and in detail trying to pinpoint differences.
@ TMRaven: "I find it hard to believe an open dynamic has the sub-bass performance of the LCD-2 which has like a 80mm planar driver."
Just because there hasn't been a dynamic driver based headphone that offers sub-bass like LCD2's ortho driver's doesn't mean its impossible....there's a lot of things and combinations that even some of the world renown professionals have yet try it or don't even know.
Edited by DefQon - 5/11/12 at 2:27ampost #1713 of 20395/11/12 at 7:09amI'd love to see some measurements on the FA-011. From what I was told the DT990 offers better sub-bass performance than the FA-011, and the DT990 is not without its own rolloff.

I thought you were exaggerating in a joking manner DefQon... Hmm I will be very interested in how you tamed the highs into the LCD2's highs...

Quote:I did it in a blind testing manner. There is nothing special about the LCD2 high's, the LCD2 is well favourited because of its treble and bass performance.
No to mention I have rev.1 LCD2's which I favourite over the rev.2, both the 011 and the rev.1 have a tonally similar dark signature, the 011's more so darker.

Quote:The DT990 sounds totally different to the 011's. The DT990 have a brighter signature and bit harsh high's. Both the rev.1 LCD and 011 has a somewhat similar dark signature. I've only had experience with the DT990 600ohm version driving from a nuforce HDP amp while back and it sounded better then the 011 because I didn't have many expensive amp's to drive them properly. Now that time has gone by, I've had experience and owned quite a large inventory of can's, dac's and amp's. As LFF said at the start of this thead, the 011's when amped properly with a matching signature amp really shines and is well worth above its current value.
EDIT:
Any who, back to my mod, I cannot varnish the wooden cup's as it already has some sort of acrylic wood stain on it, so bit of polishing to make it shinier will do, now I need some opinion's from you guys, do you think I should sand down the black grill's to silver color or just leave the black grill's as it is? I think the silver grill's look will make the can's look bit more upper class in value....
Edited by DefQon - 5/11/12 at 7:40pmpost #1717 of 20395/11/12 at 7:37pmYou're suggesting the FA-011 to scale better with an amp than a 600Ω beyer?

Is it out of the AUNE dac/amp that you were talking about before? I really find the FA011 to be bright with hot treble, besides its glaring/aggressive mids.

Quote:Nah I sold it off to fund it for my Violectric V100 which I purchased specifically for my LCD2's, this combination sounds phenomenal and takes the sound onto another level, haven't found a well pairing amp for my HD800's yet though (at least within my budget of $1k). Might purchase the Aune dac/amp again later on for some opamp rolling, bit lacking on funds at the moment from purchasing some Piccolino cable recently.

Got them in today.
Well, they do have a lot of bass, way too much. I listened as much as I could before hitting the EQ and cutting everything below 130Hz by 4-6dB. That helped a lot, I could finally hear details in the mids. These really do have a lovely tone, when you aren't drowning in bass.
Oh, and the earpads... my ears are large, mini-satellite dish sized, and I have to say these are rather painful. For me they're more like on-ear rather than over-ear. I can only wear them for an hour at a time before the soreness gets to be too much. Even my Grado bowls are better than this.
Edit: Oh, and how do the earpads come off these things?

Edit: Oh, and how do the earpads come off these things?Yeah the pads are a pain in the butt, I've contacted Fischer before regards to changing there pads to some more round and shallower so it cups over your ear, unfortunately from all the pads they've experimented the current earpads offer the best sound for these can's.
Give your can's about 130 hours burn-in and the overall sound will settle down a bit, they sound a bit boomy on fresh set's, bit over 100 hrs of burn in will have the bass tamed.

Quote:011's are very inconsistent over every batch and build.
post #1725 of 20395/13/12 at 4:17amI got bored waiting for frogbeats etc to restock, so I've just ordered from GD Audiobase instead. I know there are loads of horror stories but a few people have told me recently that they only took about 3 weeks to arrive. Hopefully all goes well!
