Woo Audio 6-SE. Overkill for K701s? - Page 3

Unless you have a CD collection getting a CD player is useless. Just buy a new Woo or Ming and see if you like it, return it if you don't; simple biggrin.gif

I would buy the amp you want first. Right now I'm using an iTouch and it sounds very good, really. The GUI alone is good enough to keep my mind off this pedantic audiophile craze. I suggest adding a dock w/ line-out, too. The Macbook's dac sounded a bit tinny and harsh (i really disliked it). I much preferred the onboard of my HP laptop (more mellow and boomy). I'm also saving up for a NFB-3, too. Meanwhile, I'm very satisfied and instead rather spend my money on headphones.

I don't have a tube amp, yet. My first headphone amp is a KICAS Caliente. It is really good with the 701's. I have also heard it is very good with other headphones like the HD650, D2k (two which interest me most) and even decently run 600 ohm beyers.

I suggest option 3, or the NFB3 without compromise on the amp you truly want!

I know you read my review, but I did edit some things I felt I understated...

I know you really like the 701's, so I wanted to elaborate a bit to give your a better impression....

The caliente has excellent transparency, and I think that is why it excels with the 701's. It is above all neutral, but has a very smooth power delivery. I first used a Pioneer stereo receiver and that had just sheer power. The Caliente feels more refined and smooth. The amp still retains the 701's rather lean sound signature. I'd say the amp changed about 15% of the sound signature. I also noticed playing around with these different low end dacs that they affected the sound signature, too.

There are Stax cans that are expensive. The Ed10 is $2k+. The PS1000 is close to two grand.

I'm not saying it as a hard rule. I just think, IMHO, I'd get components that are all around a similar price range. It's pretty much how I've always put my rigs together. More or less. When I've had the various 70x 'phones I most likely wouldn't have invested $1000+ into an amp nor a DAC. Would I spend $500-$600 for the 70x? Sure. I did too. I used the Gilmore Lite with DPS which I got from Justin. I also had the DacMagic at the time.

When I got the HD800 I felt the rest of my system needed to catch up with them so I did. I believe a setup is only as good as the weakest link. I know that the 70x would sound great out of the 6SE. Hell, I've heard it. I also think they'll sound pretty stellar out of the WA6. :)

baka thanks.. i was thinking about buying a wa5le as the next step for my set up- but hd800 would be the next logical choice..

Hey Prashant, Been reading through this thread and saw you asked about the little dots. I have the mark 1V SE, and it's not even fully broken in yet. If I make it to Philly, we can compare it to Lee's WA6SE. Also IMHO, if you can't afford everything you want now, buy the best piece you can afford now (ie: WA6SE) and build your system around the one great piece, and add as you can afford it. Your a young guy, and you know your in this for the long hall. Compromising now on all lesser equipment will just cost you more money and hassles in the long run. Build your rig one great piece at a time!

I hear you about balancing the system, it does make sense.  I'll be going to a meet in early May w/ a chance to re-audition and hopefully purchase a used WA6-SE.  I escaped the first time, but I may be powerless to resist this second encounter.

Words of wisdom, Howard.  I'd love to compare your LD Mark IVSE to the WA6-SE - that would be so useful!  Really hope you make it.

Just pulled the trigger on a used WA6.  This leaves me more than enough for my source.  Thanks for all who helped.  I will probably go for a WA6-SE or DNA Sonett when I'm getting closer to HD800s.

Nice deal. Enjoy it for a while. There's no rush to upgrade. Just kick back and rediscover your favorite tunes. Let us know your impressions.

Excellent!  I'm a recent WA6 owner myself, and it's a great combo.  Let the tubes warm up a bit each time before settling into your listening session.

Received my WA6 today.  Just sublime.  I had to sell my DAC to buy another so for now I'm running it right out of my laptop.  It doesn't have the headroom of the 6-SE by a long shot but tonally, it's almost exactly what I was looking for for my K701s.

Just need to roll to some better tubes now.
