CMoy Amp part

Thread Starter

Just a few questions regarding a DIY CMoy amp. I'm using this guide for parts: http://tangentsoft.net/audio/cmoy-tutorial/parts.html

When buying a capacitor, what does its capacitance do in the circuit? Would it be better buying a 35 microFarad or 25 microFarad capacitor? I know that a higher capacitance means it can store more charge and takes longer to fill to maximum charge.

Thanks for your assistance.

I think you might be looking at the voltage, in which case either will do perfectly

cheers

Oh whoops, you're right Fred, thanks, my bad.

Where could I find a volume/power combo knob (sorry I don't know its technical name) to put in the CMoy rather than the suggested separate power and potentiometers? Also, if I do put one of those in the CMoy I'm building, in a mint tin, how would I wire it to the board?

Thanks again for any help you guys can provide!

Tangent has some in his part shop and they

are also available at mouser.

The Alps RK0971221Z05 is available at Mouser

That's exactly what you're looking for. Alps RK097 series that is recommended for the CMoy and it's switched.

I think it just has 8 pins as opposed to a standard dual ganged pot which would have 6.

Ah, good find. Thanks you guys. Though I'm still unsure about how to place it on the board since Tangent's circuit board looks pretty cramped on the side of the mint tin which is where I wanted the potentiometer in addition to the input and output jacks.

I just stumbled upon another CMoy project: http://www.jdslabs.com/assembly_cmoy203.php

Which one of the 2 CMoy guides mentioned in this thread would you guys recommend? The JDS Labs CMoy looks more like what I wanted my CMoy to look like in the end, but is about $10 more expensive.

What tangent one are you talking about? This one?

If so, that's the RK0971221Z05 already, just leave that toggle switch out completely and use the bottom two pins on the pot instead of the toggle switch.

If you'd like to make life easier on yourself. JDS Labs makes a PCB you can buy, so all you have to do is get the components and solder. Some people like building their stuff from scratch. Up to you. I find premades a lot less aggravating. And you still get to say..."Yes, I made that".

Yup that's the one. I just wasn't too sure of how the wiring works out without the on/off switch. Thanks again for your help, I'll be sure to keep the pin setup in mind. smily_headphones1.gif

That's true, I might end up doing the JDS Lab one because of all of the positive feedback about it and its premade circuit board layout.

You can barely see one of the switch pins there just so you know. They're at the back of the shell, they're mostly covered there, but you can see the one.

If you want to get the JDS one I say go for it. I like point-to-point wiring myself, but it's DIY, Y=Yourself so choose what YOU want to do here.

On second thought, I'm thinking the CMoyBB is kind of pricey. In Tangent's guide, does anyone know what gauge wire he uses?

My guess is 24AWG. Most 9V snaps have 24AWG so I have to believe it's 24AWG since it looks just like the wire coming from the battery in the pic except for the one red wire that looks bigger.

I've looked through some of the threads and it looks like most people are using 22 gauge wire, and 24 for extra flexibility. I'll probably go with the 22 gauge since I already have some at home. :D

I think he just used whatever wire he had laying around spare...

The exact gauge is not really important.

Small enough to fit and big enough to work with

is the right size.
