Good Budget Redbook/DVD Player?

I have a friend who enjoys good music. A number of years ago I set her up with an audiophile recommended but cheap DVD player to use with a Cary Audio 2A3 tube amp. I am blanking on the brand of the DVD player but it was one that sold for about $100 and everyone was modding because it was such a great "bang-for-the buck" player.

It is now starting to die and I am hoping to find another good sounding but reasonably priced unit to replace it. It would be good if it could play DVD's as her old one did although her main emphasis is redbook CD so that is where the quality should be. I imagine that she could go up to around $300. I did a little searching last night and came up with a Cambridge Audio Sonata DV30 that looked like a possibility.

Anyone have a recommendation?

Thanks!

I don't know if a used unit is in consideration but I can tell you from first hand experience that the Denon DVD2900 is a very high-end sounding player (and yes I've heard high-end if you were wondering).

But don't take my word, do some googling on it.   Typically you can find these for under $200 but back in the day it went for $1000.

EDIT:  Oh and it also plays .mp3 files so you can burn a data disc with .mp3s for a long play list. Handy for background music at social gatherings.

I have a Cambridge Audio DVD 99 which sells for $299. It's a DVD w/1080p upload, CD and SACD player. The research I did before purchase indicated it was a very good value for the money. I use mine primarily as an SACD player.

Here's a link to a seller, you can also go the the Cambridge Audio website for specs.

The Harman Kardon DVD 48 is an excellent player that also does quite well with SACD and DVD Audio. Redbook performance is also excellent. Best of all, you can often find them on Ebay auctions for around $100 refurbished by HK.

Thanks for the tips. I also found a NAD on Audio Advisor that looks good and has a USB input for mp3's I guess...

Poke around Audiogon for used DVD-A players. I picked up an older Technics DVD-A10 for $100. It cost $1,200 new.

Built like a tank and it sounds terrific. Even better, it has a non-DRM digital out so I can rip my DVD-A discs legally.
