lookin' for good desktop monitors.

Thread Starter

I'm in the market for some desktop monitors. something good quality that has a nice clean sound, now I'm not a producer or anything I'm just an audiophile so the less expensive the better. I was looking at something in the range of the m-audio av 30's.they look the part, sound awesome and dosn't cost to much. but I was just wondering if anybody knew of anything else they might suggest that would be better like from creative or krk.

Well I don't know a whole lot, so correct me if I'm wrong, but to be honest

The M-Audio AV-30's aren't very good monitors.  For their price range (They're around 75 right?) I don't think you'll get very good monitors.

The main monitors I've heard of are the Audioengines A2 ($200) or the Audioengine A5's ($325 VERY LEGIT MONITORS)

My friend has the M-Audio BX5A, but I hear they lack bass and require a subwoofer.

I thought the bx5a sounded a bit thin , for the same price as the av30's you can get the Edifier Studio R1600T Plus for the price the Edifier's good.

Focal CMS series

Adam AX series

Genelecs

Dynaudio

Just reeling a few names off.

Why are you avoiding KRKs? They supposedly excellent for both monitoring and just rocking to music. I'm looking at getting a pair of RP6G2s as soon as I can afford it.

KRKs are amazing.

They are easily my prefered small monitors. I've had quite a few chances to listen to them extensively. I don't OWN any (anymore, I used to) simply because I don't have a need for them. If I needed some though, I'd buy KRKs everytime.

Head to Guitar Center and give them a listen. They have a TON of monitors to compare.

I have the RP6G2 with the RP10s sub and they are awesome sounding desktop monitors. I enjoy them a lot and still use them over my LCD-2 when I just don't feel like having something on my head, covering my ears.

I got the KRK Rp8 G2s to avoid having to invest in a sub woofer as I had to get an audio interface and could not afford both but I still wanted a nice low bass extension for my productions. I am absolutely in love with these monitors.

+1 for KRK monitors

Sounds like the OP needs some KRKs. lol.

They're ALWAYS my recommendation for desktop monitors. I need to break down and get another set...I do miss not having something on my head every now and then.

Aren't the KRKs a bit 'hyped' though? Although that's the entry RP range rather than the VXT range which the next level up and supposedly more neutral. On the plus side they're very affordable (for monitors).

For the same price as the krk's , the prodipes sound a little bit better.

I don't think they're over hyped at all. You'll heard people suggest them because they're good.

The single most over hyped (among non audiophiles, I suppose) desktop monitors (luckily noone suggested them here) are the Yamaha HS line. First time I heard them I reacted as such "These are awful" and flipped the switch back to a pair of KRKs. I've been told by a friend that's more into production that they are literally so bad if you can get something to sound good on them, it'll sound good on anything. Haha

I meant hyped in the way the word's used on home recording gear forums, as in it's coloured rather than being ruler-flat. In the KRKs case, they're apparently slightly bass-heavy, although that wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing for people listening rather than using them in production.
