Need help getting two sources working with a DAC

post #1 of 11

Before, I used a RCA-to-3.5mm cord to connect my Xbox 360 to my computer's line in so that I could hear my PC audio and Xbox audio with one pair of headphones. I just bought the FiiO E7 and when I plug it into my PC, I only hear my PC audio and not my 360. How can I use my DAC and still hear the two sources? I also have some M-Audio AV40s so I need to get those into the rig besides my headphones.

You will need to unplug the headphones from the E7 and plug your speakers into the E7 instead when you want to use them.

In your computer, make sure to have "USB Audio DAC  " selected as output while your xbox plays into the soundcard's input.  The input must not be muted in Windows Mixer when you play with your xbox.  I think you should only mute it when you are not using it.

Ok so when I have the DAC unplugged and headphones plugged into my PC, I can hear both the PC audio and Xbox audio just fine. When I plug the DAC into the PC, all I hear through the DAC is my PC audio even though I have not muted or moved anything around besides plugging in the DAC.

Be sure your DAC is set as your default audio device in control panel, and your on board audio is your default communication device.

I'm in Sound and Audio Devices Properties (Windows XP), USB Audio DAC is the default device for Sound playback and Realtek HD Audio Input is the Sound recording default. When I go to the Voice tab and test the Realtek HD Audio Input, it works during the test but it sounds absolutely horrible. When I press finish the end the test, the audio is gone right away.

I'm now looking at the properties for the USB Audio DAC and there is no option to show volume controls for Mic In and Line In, while if I look at the properties for Realtek HD Audio output (my onboard sound), it has options to show volume controls for the Mic In.

I think I have found a solution!

Check out the attatched image. If you plug in your laptop to the E7 as usual, and take the RCA to 3.5mm cable into the socket marked with a number 9, I think you'll be in business. *fingers crossed*20101125955670.jpg

Nope! That's how I have it hooked up now, but when I want to listen to my PC, I unplug the RCA-3.5mm cord.

Aux input is to use the E7 as amp only.

Will it still work with USB connected?

Aux In has priority over USB In so when something is plugged into the aux in, I can't hear the PC through the USB.

Dang it.. Maybe it's like a stereo. When headphones aren't plugged in, the speakers are on. When you plug them in, the speakers are by-passed automatically. Is unplugging one thing, really that big of a deal?

Well my M-Audio AV40s just came in and I set up my rig like this:

PC-->E7 DAC + Xbox 360 --> AV40 --> HD555s

I will primarily be using my HD555s and the AV40s only when I'm working in Reason, so I guess the AV40s are acting as a basic mixer. Should I get a mixer so I don't have to keep the AV40s powered on all the time?
