ipod docks and speakers... Please advise.

I want to play music in my room from my ipod or laptop on decent quality (preferrably <$100 new/used) amp/speaker(s).

I have this "Go Groove" ipod dock I got as a gift a long time ago and the speakers suck obviously: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41b-bzKYrNL.jpg

1. Is the unit itself limiting the sound quality, even if I had good speakers?

-If so, what is a decent ipod dock unit?

   OR

2. Should I play music from my laptop instead?

Either way, what is a good speaker(s) you recommend. I'm really hoping to just buy 1 speaker to play my music and have decent sound at normal volume. I listen to mostly bassy electronic/hip hop music.

Please advise or give me any other info on other equipment, etc. If I'm misguided and truly need to spend more money, just let me know. But I'm just starting out and don't need the best shit.

Thanks.

Worry more about getting a good pair of speakers. That's the most important part, save for having a quality, lossless recording on your iPod.

How much are you looking to spend on speakers? Also, keep in mind that used speakers save you a lot of money. You'll find plenty of good ones listed at Audiogon.

I would use the laptop as a source not the ipod and get active speakers to run from the laptop. This is the kind of speaker I mean

 I have mostly 320k mp3s. Probably $100 but I'd prefer new.

I would spend a little more and get M-Audio AV40's. They have very good reviews all around the internet. I have them to and they do sound incredibly good for the price even if used straight out of a laptop. It is adviced to put them at ear height though, it greatly improves sound quality.

I really can't compliment them enough..
