I got a few requests / questions so I decided to get off my lazy ass and take a few snapshots. A few notes:

  • I didn't want to go overboard because I wanted to retain some of the AT woody flavor.
  • Don't put on the back of the cup - there isn't enough clearance between the cup and the plastic cage. The driver needs to breath.
  • I put a few pieces on the side of the cup instead.
  • Wash hands after touching that piece of yellow fiberglass (not shown). Don't breath those fibers in. Vacuum around work area after you are done.

I don't really get what you're doing here. It seems like you have only put the "after" pics here. A comparison with the "before" pics would be nice. And what changes is this mod supposed to give?

To comment at point 1. I'd not even bother to think of mods for these beautiful cans. It's like a sin. But that's just me. Mine stay firmly at their original state!

Also subscribed -- interested in these headphones.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to attend the Bay Area meet, but I did read all kinds of positive comments about your modded W1000X.  What changes would you say the mods produced vs. stock?

The W1000X stock sounded overly romantic. The decay took too long and there was just too much woody resonance. I wanted to tighten up things so they would work better with rock music. I think Shane55 put it best when he said these sound like a cross between the Denons and the Grados.

Purrin: Do all 4 of the wires terminate at the plug?

I'm not sure but I suspect they do. AT glued the 1/4" plug so I can't open it easily to confirm. I was very tempted to perform surgery at the recent meet to see how they sounded balanced on Rockcod / YBM's β22 right next to me though - but I forgot to bring my soldering iron.

That's exactly the sound signature I like from the Grandioso! Have you tried other headphones that match your sound preference before breaking up the Grandioso?

Yes I've tried many, only the Grandioso sounds like the Grandioso. I just wanted a little bit more Grado in the Grandioso hence the mods.

Thanks for posting pics of your W1000x mods, I've also read a few good comments on your modded W1000x. In one of the pics, is that dynamat being applied to the back of the driver? Also which dynamat did you use for this mod as they come in different thickness.

As we speak I'm doing Purrin's mod in my office with the pricey Dynamat Extreme. I'll let you guys know how it sounds.
