I attempted to show him the light by getting him to listen to both my DT-990s and my HD800s, but still he insists on the buds. Apparently the full-size cans are "too inconvenient" and the IE8s are uncomfortable.
Oh well, at least I tried.. and it's probably healthier for his wallet this way
You know you're an audiophile when it's 1.55am and you are not sleeping because as soon as the song finishes and the next one starts, you want to listen to it until the end..
Sounds like my dad. Years of going to concerts and rocking really do a number on your hearing. First thing he does when he tries out one of my new headphones is turn the volume up all the way. I think at that point you should still be able to appreciate soundstage and separation as well as overall soundsig though so there may be hope yet
You know you're an audiophile when....
you no longer enjoy, feel, or know what your listening to. You're just constantly analyzing and comparing sounds and frequencies in your head.

I probably sound like that on Facebook since my monthly "status updates" tend to be about audio gear or analyzing today's cruddy-sounding music, and not good-sounding music itself. >.>
BTW your avatar is freaking hilarious! Love it! I can totally imagine Jude doing that when he hears good-sounding gear, hahahahaha.
One question though, what is TMAC? I see it all over the place on Head-Fi, like your old "Currawong is watching" avatar.

When you debate leaving your girlfriend when she says your brand new headphones and amp (hd 558 and fiio e7) just sound like normal headphones just louder. Sad sad day.
