Amps - found the money, lost the itch ....

I know it will resurface one day, but its weird how the all-powerful itch just went away, roughly two weeks ago, and hasnt returned. Heavy trip.

I'm with you there.

Which one to get? I found one but then wondered: What headphones will I buy next, will it suit them? Do I want to shell out that much money to realise that I need to shell out twice as much again when I decide which phones to get? Is this all a huge waste of money, should I be saving it, investing it? Should I be spending my time doing something more productive? WHY? Why? why? I'm both too young and too old for all this... Sigh.

That's the easy way out!

Actually, that's sounding good right about now... frown.gif

I thought I could slow down the itch by going DIY. That was a mistake...

Let me guess - you ended up buying the really good components that others leave out of their amps, right ? Then you started to mod a pair of SR60s, realised you would need mahogany cups to get the full effect and now your basement looks like the shop you did 'Woodworking 101' in ?

Its all good :)

More like I have parts (or incoming) to build a b22, a20, M3, and I've actually managed to create a working circuit emulating Meier's "active balanced ground" topology and now I'm going to try hacking that onto the amb amps. I'm also toying with the idea of making a "portable" M3...

Once you get a hit of the "good amp" crack, there's no turning back.

And I encourage DIY. It's the cheapest route in, but you usually end up with several projects. smily_headphones1.gif

It's maybe cheap *after* you've bought all the requisite tools and equipment. Rather costly up to that point. Plus then you wind up buying extra parts, upgrades that you don't need and might never use but "you never know", not to mention all the space it takes up...

I think I need to close up shop after I finish my current batch of projects. No time or money left! (or rather, I keep stealing it from other areas that need it)

Armaegis, the only advice I can give you is *never* get the urge to tear down a car and rebuild it, particularly if you think it takes a lot of space to work on electronics. During my time in the Army, I was in a position where I could work on my 'project' all day Saturday and Sunday but had to pack everything back into a trailer at the end of each day : fortunately, there wasnt a whole lot else to do on base. As for time and money deficits, this was the 80s and parts that went for $150 in the US were double that here - there is no way that I would attempt the same thing now without at least a hundred K AND a fully-equipped, airconditioned 'hangar' with room for 6 cars :)

The setup-takedown time is enough sometimes to not bother with my projects for a day. I want to spend the majority of my time working, not just getting things into place. It'd be great if I could have a separate room/lab/mancave to put my stuff, but it's nice to have a kitchen table and place to park my car y'know?

Yep, got the funds, but staring at the abyss of diminishing returns is far from enticing. Vertigo and the sometimes seemingly persuasive posts around these parts encourage a reckless plunge, but it's usually tempered when I start listening to my gear.

I'm not in this for the arms race, and am thankfully reminded that it's all about the music when I'm engaged every time by my modest setup.
