List: Portable Players That Support Gapless Playback

Was recently in the the market for a new DAP/PMP and had to read up quite a bit to see which players support gapless playback.  It's something a lot of manufacturers fail to mention whether their players do or not.  So, I decided with the help of this community to compose a list that supports this wonderful feature.

 

Just in case- What is gapless playback?

 

Gapless playback is the complete album playing as it should be, without any interruptions or "gaps" between the songs.  Examples-  Live albums, Mixed Electronic albums, Concept Albums etc....A good old school example is Pink Floyd's DSOTM.

 

I will comprise a list by manufacturers.  No manufacturer is too big or too small for this list.  A lot of DAPs go on the used for sale market and it could come in handy for future purchases.

 

In reference to Rockbox.  I believe many Rockbox'ed players support gapless, but not all.  My Archos 15gb Recorder does not.  If you have a player that does support it, please advise if the player is RB'ed or not.

 

With all the "Generations" and Firmware upgrades with various players, post the model you own and can confirm.  Example- Ipod Nano 15th Generation supports gapless....For other players if the player did not support it until a firmware upgrade, post that as well. If you have a Rockboxed player and can remember before the RB update if it was supported, post that as well.

 

Exception/Disclaimer-  If you rip an entire CD as "one" large file, that does not constitute gapless playback.  ALL players should play gapless as "1" large file..I hope...Split track gapless support only.

 

I will update this list often...I will make 2 lists (Supports & Does Not Support) and move them accordingly if in the future an upgrade grants the support.  I will post the players I have atm that support it.

All newer iPods (from 5.5 classic onwards) and iPhones support gapless, to the best of my knowledge.

 

EDIT: Rockbox not required too, that is. A fully stock iPod and iPhone are capable of gapless.

Shouldn't a Sansa Fuze with Rockbox also support gapless?

Thanks az & 123...

 

However, my iPod journey ended with the 5.5G video.  Then after a while I purchased a Touch 2G.  I have no idea what came in between those two.  In reference to iPhones, I believe we are up to 4G?

 

123..., I don't have a Fuze so I can't confirm that.

With Rockbox, yes, but not stock. And I can verify Clip+ (with Rockbox) and Cowon i9 as gapless.

The Fuze+ with the latest firmware does gapless.  Just verified as I'm finalizing my review of it.

All players that can run Rockbox are gapless.

  • Archos: Jukebox 5000, 6000, Studio, Recorder, FM Recorder, Recorder V2and Ondio
  • Cowon: iAudio X5, X5V, X5L, M5, M5L, M3 and M3L
  • iriver: iHP100 series, H100 series, H300 series and H10 series
  • Olympus: M:Robe 100
  • Packard Bell: Vibe 500
  • SanDisk: Sansa c200 (not v2), e200 and e200R series, Fuze, Clip and Clip+
  • Toshiba: Gigabeat X and F series

Unstable ports

Unusable ports

  • Cowon iAudio 7, Creative ZVM, Logik Dax, Meizu M6 and M3
    Onda VX747, VX767 and VX777,
    Tatung Elio TPJ1022, Sandisk Sansa m200, c100,
    Google Android, Apple iPod Classic

 

 

Edit: Android is listed as unusable, I would say it is unstable

Thanks mp3.  Great post.....My Archos jukebox recorder (15g) that I purchased in 2002 and R'boxed a while later, does not support it though.  Unless they updated the build.

I believe as long as iTunes is what loaded the files onto it, it would be gapless. I can't say with 100% certainty though.

The Cowon D3 with Rockbox is gapless, except for the rare slight blip while playing MP3s from a concert album.
