Recommendations For PC 2.0 Speakers Help :)

Thread Starter

So this is my first post on head-fi, and I was hoping someone could suggest a good pair of 2.0 speakers for a computer (PC).

If someone actually has the time, I'd appreciate if they gave me choices for different budgets but if not that's cool too.  My budget is probably around 250 or less, and if someone really has the time could they suggest a pair for 100, 200, 250, and 300 budgets?

I have the Logitech Z-2300 speakers ehhhh not the greatest I know but they were a Christmas present so better than nothing.  I also have a HT Omega Striker 7.1 soundcard, also not the best as I heard, but ANYWAYS I've been looking at Audioengine A2's and A5's, and I personally listened to the A2's and I didn't like them at all, maybe they were a defect store sample idk.  I also heard the M-Audio BX5A are good.

I listen to all sorts of genres: rock, metal, alternative, trance, dubstep, drum & bass, and few hiphop/rap/r&b, and I really enjoy the effect of a subwoofer (don't really know how to explain it, but that effect that like vibrates the room) haha so I'm looking for a pair of speakers that can deliver some good bass and treble I guess without the need of an add-on subwoofer.  I'm not looking for overkill bass, but has just enough to deliver good bass.

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to ask me I don't know if I provided enough information for you guys.

Thanks for anyone's help!! :)

Either the swan's as mentioned (i've never heard them so I cant vouch but I've heard really good things about them) or a pair of Audioengine A5's. I have the A5's and I couldnt be happier. incredible dynamic range, nice large soundstage, small compact size, fully expandable and compatible with other speakers/amp+reciever combos. Word of warning, if you plan to get a DAC/amp make sure it has pre-amp outputs to send to the speakers because the speakers cannot be connected to an amplified source. From what it sounds like you'll be fine jsut connecting it to the sound card.

The A5's have both RCA (stereo) input and 2x 3.5mm inputs.

do you know if the audioengine a2's are any good?

I heard they're pretty good but when I listened to them like I said earlier they sounded awful.  Are they really that bad? Or did I hear a defective unit?

Any opinions on the M-Audio BX5A's?

I would like the a5's, but $325 is a lot and they never go on sale =/

I thought the A2's sounded bad aswell , a bit muddy , bloated and weak with lower notes , they also add bass to everything.

I didn't like the BX5A much, to me they sounded a bit thin and weak on bass and the highs can get a little too much at times , also m-audios bulid quality is awful they use cheap caps which fail alot.

The prodipe pro 5's are really good sounding monitors if you want actives, i preffered the alesis m1 mk2 passive's they had an even larger sound stage and better stereo imaging they honestly sound like floor standers and go all the way down to 45hz, the alesis have the advantage of being passive and not having the amp built into the back means the cabinet is better tuned and designed , also having a seperate amp in it's own unit is probley better than an amp built into the back of a speaker.

The prodipes pro 5's are rougly £265 a pair , the alesis m1 mk2 passives are £119 a pair but you will need a seperate amp that can handle a 4ohm load.
