The best portable player that is PORTABLE and great to drive JH5-pro without an amp...any...

Hey guys, how's it going? First of all, I'm not a pro (newbie) .

So here's the topic: My old Ipod video starts to screw up the sound of some vocals. And I don't like the way it drives the jh-5 pro anyway...I listen to some techno music and some rock ("light" metal ) but also vocals and a few symphonies. Well, I know jh-5s are just the entry lvl with 2 balanced armatures in each ear and thus can't be that good for symphonies. (honestly I don't have any thing better than the jh-5 pro so I don't know what that "better" could be).

So what do you guys have in mind? (something much better than the ipods in terms of driving balanced armatures but still as about slim as them). oh, that's right, no amp.( hate to wear cargo pants all the time -_- )

Many thanks in advance.

Reconsider the amp?  IMO the biggest difference you can make in getting the most out of a headphone is a LoD and a good amp. I'm using an FiiO L3 and a Pico Slim with Westone ES5s as well as a Teclast T51 (which STILL needs the Pico Slim 'cause only the line out is truly great sounding). You can get solutions that make 'em QUITE easy to carry. Failing that? The T51 does a very good job of driving everything I own without the amp. It's just not as good as with the amp.

+1 above

at the moment i use an ipod classic ->line out -> arrow 12HE amp -> UE Tf10Pro or HD650

and i think its great, cause the arrow is really slim, and it ands just that bit more to what i'm listening to, it's subtle ast first but it drives both my head phones very nicely.

and one last thing is that the battery life is pretty much teh same as the ipod, so when one runs out of battery the other is nearly there as well.

But as for standalone portable source gear: i've been looking in the HiFIman 601/602, but even then people say that it needs more power.

Hope that helps

Oh well...the thing I have about the amps is that even the arrow or the pico slim adds thickness as a bundle. And it's just hard to fit an 20+mm thick brick into my pocket...it will fit in my cargo pants...but what if i wear jeans? It's all about portability. I just really doubt that there is not a single device out there can drive a dual unit BA smoothly.

Thanks for the replies though , kaneman, ittius. =)

Also...if there is anyway to ...like attach it to my belt...or other easier ways to carry...please do tell. I appreciate it.

Thanks, ittius. I guess this is it then... I see that the colorfly's got the new c4 in progress, and the high end version is gonna be pretty powerful. Hmm...maybe? We'll see.

The Teclast T51/Nationite S:Flo2 is one of the most powerful PMPs out there, so if you're set on going PMP only? It's one to consider especially at the price.

The Cowon D2 rated 74mW@16 Ohm, it's get really loud with low impedance IEMs and it's sound like(push pull) AMPs attached to it. Hifiman HM-601, HM-602 rated lower 30mW@32 Ohm and other options are like Nationite N2, S:Flo 2.
