Home theater upgrade coming, right after I get some advice.

I'm in the market for some new speakers and maybe a new 5.1 receiver. First of all my current setup sounds terrible and I know my speakers are rattling but I don't know how good my receiver will sound with better speakers, that's why I'm not sure if I should upgrade both.

This is my current receiver JVC RX-6008V

 http://www.crutchfield.com/p_111RX6000V/JVC-RX-6000V.html?tp=179&tab=features_and_specs

Can anybody tell me how it would sound with new speakers?

I know its entry level and cheap, that's why I'm concerned about the quality.

I'm considering getting Klpsch HD 500 speakers, and if I buy them from newegg I can get a Yamaha RX-V467 receiver with them

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882780018

Would that Yamaha receiver be better sounding than my JVC one with the same speakers? Or should I save some money and buy just the speakers for $380 from Amazon

Also speaker suggestions in the $300-$500 range if anyone could be so kind. The only reason I'm looking at the Klipsch speakers is that they have the features I like and are in my price range. I'm not really sure if these are any good.

I'm not dead set on a whole 5.1 setup just the two fronts and the sub are what I use for music so that's my main focus.

If it make any difference this will be used for TV and computer. Although I usually play games and listen to music from my computer 90% of the time.

Thanks in advance, this forum has been a lot of help in putting me in debt in the past and I'm hopeful you'll pull through again.gs1000.gif

Also is this the best section for this question? Or can someone refer me to another website to gain knowledge on home theater equipment.

Save your money for a good 2.1 channel rig and leave the gimmickry illusions of surround sound. As a veteran of the HT thrill, I have a monolith of gear collecting dust while I use that 65" for news, concerts, sports, etc through it.

Thanks for the responses, avforum has a lot of information I'm sure it will be a great resource of knowledge for me. Ive had this JVC receiver for well over 10 years so it never occurred to me how un popular it is. But come to think of it wasn't JVC and RCA once the same company?(or something like that) Yikes! Now I'm sure my receiver will never do any decent speakers justice.

And I'm not dead set on a 5.1 or 7.1 setup but I don't want to limit myself in the future. And I definitely don't want the receiver to lack in regards to I/O. Although I will be using this for mostly music, video gaming is going to account for about 30% of its use. And I think gaming can benefit from some rear speakers.

Thanks again guys, Id really like to make a decision soon so anything to help me narrow my search would be fantastic.

One more thing someone who owed me some money just payed me so my budget has a little more wiggle room now. I'm trying not to go above $800.

I'm considering this at the moment is there anything else in the price range that I should consider?

Just as an update if anybody is paying attention.

Last night I decided to buy a Yamaha RX-V667 and Harman Kardon HKTS 20bq 5.1 speakers. I don't know much about Harmon Kardon speakers but on amazon if you buy both of those items you get about $550 off the price. So basically the receiver was free! Even if the speakers don't end up being my cup o tea I can always sell them and try another brand. But one thing is for sure they will sound a lot better than my JVCs. lol

Awesome! Mine showed up today and I'm in the process of learning how to use it, lol. It sounds great so far. I cant wait to watch a movie now that I have surround sound again. Thanks again for your help Mark. Avforum is addicting, much like this one.  gs1000.gif

I also think surround is something of a gimmick. I had a 5.1 setup some years back, but it didn't do much for me. Sure, you can hear sound behind you, etc. but it didn't add much to the experience.

These days, I just run a two channel system with good speakers. It makes me plenty happy.

For $300-$500, I'd look for a good pair of used speakers. They're stable components and hold up well. New models are usually slight tweaks of older models, so don't worry about being a few generations behind. Personally, I'd look for a used Magnepan MMG. They're $600 new, but $400-$500 used. They sound better than anything in that price range deserves to.

Well, I'm definitely more of a music listener. But I got the surround sound because I had it before and liked it then also, I didn't want to loose the option to use it. For now I want to save a little $$$ but in a few months I may get two more front speakers that I will use primarily in stereo for music.

I'd just put all the money into a good pair of front channels. You'll benefit when listening.

If surround is a must, a few audiophile companies make center/rear speakers that integrate with their left/right stereo speakers. Magnepan offers this. So does PSB, which I also think highly of.

JBL has launched the Studio 1 range of speakers, which are relatively inexpensive; the bookshelf Studio 130's retail for about $299/pair. I know nothing about JBL speakers, but since you asked for HT, I thought I mention it. I might have to go and listen to them, if I get the chance.

you've been given some good advice.

a few, dont they all?  maybe its different here but pretty much all speaker makers do matching centres and rears to go with things they intended as either floorstanding or shelfmount stereo speakers.
