Westone 4 & muffled sounds

So not to long ago I posted saying that my westone 4 sounded muffled on my iphone. Even with the Fiio E5 it sounded like music was playing through a blanket. The only difference is that with the Fiio E5 it was a little louder.

 

However after testing them out for some time now, it seems like this problem only happens when I'm on the iphone or fiio E5. On the computer or stereo the muffle is gone. It's clear as day even at super low volumes. I'm only guessing and but is it possible that the westone 4 needs more power? But if that was the case the Fiio should have been good enough for them. I can't image the westone needs more than the Fiio E5 to sound good.

Well, just because the E5 makes them louder doesn't mean they are driving them properly.  The W4 has crossovers than maybe sensitive to the iPhones and E5s output impedance.  Once you go past one to two drivers things get a bit more tricky.

Which Iphone generation? The poster above reports good results because he's possibly using an iphone that doesn't have so much output impedance. Would be interesting in knowing which gen Iphone you are using...

I use my W4 un-EQed either via FiiO 7 DAC or straight from iPhone 4 and frankly not sure what you are talking about. Can't it be just the effect of more spacious soundstage and less prominent mids that you are more used to? Do you use EQ? If not try rock and vocals iPod presets and see if they change you perception.

Btw, couldn't you just continue the original thread instead of starting every week new short thread on exactly same topic? wink.gif

Did you make sure you don't have a sound effect preset or eq set on your Iphone. May have set it for your last iem and forgot.

mrconfuse only has 40 posts, has been a member for nearly 2.5 months and has started 14 different threads (!!).

Eq is completely off. It's too late for me to return them anyway so I have them no matter what. I was just sharing my findings

I have an iPhone 3GS as well and I don't have any issues with the W4's.  They require a little more volume than the W3 (60% of max), but they sound great.  Let me ask you this: Do you have a case on your iPhone?  The reason I ask, is that if the plug isn't inserted all the way in, you will get less than optimal sound.  Sometimes the case can get in the way.  If there's no obstruction, the issue has to be your phone or headphone out, especially if the W4's sound fine on your other sources.

I agree with you and I think that may be the problem after all. They definitely do need more volume which was something I wasn't expecting. The UM3X was very good at 2 clicks on the iphone 3gs. With 2 clicks, I could hear some soft rumble from the subway cars when music is playing. On the westone 4 it require at least 4-5 clicks just to have the same effect. T

The Westone 4 is pretty revealing and if you are playing low-bitrate MP3s on your iPhone that may be the reason you are interpreting it as veiled. Are you playing the same exact files on your computer as you are on your iPhone?
