SENNHEISER HD598 AMP

Thread Starter

Hi everyone! I'm French, thus sorry in advance for my english mistakes words ;)

I've currently a sennheiser HD598 which is plug with my Creative XtremeGamer and i'm searching for an AMP which would give me a better quality sound.

Can you give me some advices? my budget is 130$ MAX.

Do you think an AMP would be a good thing with this headphone?

I'm more someone who's listening a lot of piano on FLAC and some movies(it's almost everytime my z5500 if it's a 5.1 source)

THX in advance.

What sort of DAC are you using for the computer? Personally, with such low-impedance 'phones, I'd think the quality of the source would matter more than the amp, though, of course, a good amp is always a plus. Maybe a Head-Direct EF2 would fit your budget? It's got an integrated DAC, and it's only a little bit above your budget.

One option for you is Fiio's excellent desktop amp the E9.  It has to power to drive almost any headphone with authority, all at a very resonable price that I think should fall into your budget.

Fiio E9 = $130. I have used it with the HD598 to great effect.

This is all with the E9.

Very open soundstage, vocals are center stage, and a nice hint of sparkle without sibilance. The HD598 is maybe a TEENY bit bass shy, but it's punchy and well textured. I'm guessing that an amp that colors it with warmth would add a teeny bit of bass and take away some of the sparkle. However, I'm not about adding or taking anything away from my headphones, which is why I chose the E9.

I'd put the HD598 as an easier to drive K70x with a teeny little bit more bass, and a little little less sparkle, and smaller but more natural soundstage. They sound remarkably similar to me however. I'd say it's like a slightly unrefined K70x if anything.
