Speaker setup, issues?

I bought some used Mackie MR-8's off craigslist, good deal couldn't pass up.

 

I'm not going to lie, they've replaced my headphone setup...

 

I've been going from my AV-710 ( Prodigy 7.1 ) optical out

to my Benchmark DAC1

Balanced XLR out

Mackie MR-8's

 

one day one of the monitors started buzzing really bad, it would still produce sound but it buzzed without an input plugged in.

 

months later the other one does the same thing. I took them to a repair center according to Mackie and have yet to pick them up...

 

what would cause my monitors to be damaged?

 

could my DAC1 somehow damage my monitors?

It could have simply been interference from somewhere.

I tried it in several places around my house. The buzzing was not quiet

 

something wasn't right, I called Mackie and the guy on the phone said to bring it into a repair center.

 

plus at the time the other one was dead quiet, while the other one would buzz.
