studio monitor to pc

Ok, so i have a dedicated sound card (ht omega striker) in my pc, and i want to get studio monitors (dont know which ones yet), and i'm assuming i'm going to have to use xlr or something similar, so i was wondering if theres a simple way to connect a studio monitor to my sound card without having to buy anything other than cables and still be able to get nice quality sound.

thanks ahead of time for the help. =)

I guess a pair of RCA-to-TS cables and a y adapter to plug them into your soundcard.

Some studio montiors have XLR and TS/TRS only or XLR + TS + RCA.  Choose cables after you have decided on which monitors.  =]

Just a matter of cables and adapters. Buy the monitors you want and then worry about the connection to your source.

ok so say i get the yamaha hs50m

can u just use this cable http://www.amazon.com/HOSA-STEREO-3-5mm-TWO-XLR/dp/B000068OEP/ref=sr_1_4?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1299708518&sr=1-4 and plug it straight from my soundcard to the monitors?

btw thanks for the help =)

edit: or would it be better to use a quarter inch instead of xlr?

that would depend on the monitors and what they have for inputs.

Some use balanced XLR which you do not have and cannot really produce using what you have so you might have to go with a TRS or TS cable.

That is what a 1/4 inch is called...I am assuming you are talking about the large headphone jacks?  Those are called TRS for Tip Ring and Sleeve or TS for Tip and Sleeve.

Both are very common in recording systems, I have about 50 of the things....

Hope that helps.

Using balanced to unbalanced cable you loose half the signal about 6db of volume, the best option is TS to RCA but make sure the moniters will be ok with a TS cable rather than TRS.

well, the hs50m says 1/4 inch, so how can i tell if it's TRS or TS?

and what's all this about balanced unbalanced? it has me confused @_@

Most modern moniters will take both TRS & TS you could check the manual, balanced and unbalanced cables work differently thats why you loose 6db of signal with a balanced to unbalanced cable,

A TS to RCA cable is a fully unbalanced cable

A TRS to RCA cable is a balanced to unbalanced cable

edit: and just for educational purposes, can someone explain how this unbalanced/balanced stuff works?

This should do.

Or you may be able to find it locally, or a cheaper equivalent.

is there a name for that kinda cable? so i can search for it elsewhere, since 50 dollars is a bit much for me\

would this one work? http://www.amazon.com/Hosa-CMP153-Stereo-8In-Mono/dp/B0002CZZ0G/ref=sr_1_8?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1300390274&sr=1-8

Not specifically.  It's a 3.5mm to TS y-cable or patch cable.

That HOSA cable you might be able to find locally.
