Just finished and posted on my blog.

LINK.

Feel free to comment here or there.

No EQ at all as far as I could find.  Looks like Creative made it available before it's time. Good hard specs except for the screen. No Gapless playback either. Does play a good list of audio codecs including FLAC.

I've heard the EQ is controlled by the device automatically - by genre, etc.

You can't even sort by Genre.  Only Artist, Albums, Songs, and Playlists.  Where did you hear it would adjust the the frequencies with different Genres?   Doesn't sound any different to my ears when songs of different genre are played.

I saw a YouTube video,...apparently it was wrong info.

The Creative's Zen Touch 2 with GPS comes with an independent GPS receiver so that the unit can navigate through GPS satalite reception rather than rely on short range wifi. Creative says that 3rd party GPS software will work on it but has refused two requests to provide the names of any software that is compatable. Anyone have any idea of "specific" software that will work? All I can find is software that works with wifi, Iphone or Android phones which depends of cell signals.

Any android GPS software should work.  I don't have a need for any navigation help so I haven't researched it. GPS is useful for location tagging when taking photos, speedometer apps, and "nearby" apps that search for the nearest stores that selll what you've put into a search box. Google maps is a much lighter vector-based app now and "supposed" to be able to work with no network access if you've preloaded (when connected) enough map for the area you'll be travelling in/through.

Thanks, I don't have a cell phone that can provide navigation so I'm unaware of how they do it (cell tower or satalite). It seems that the term GPS is often used whether the tower or satalites are used. I guess that is what has me confused. From what I have read, it seems that the term "fine" seems to designate when satalite reception is used. Sorry for the lack of information but I am a basic cell phone user and use both independent car GPS units for auto routning and hand held units for navigation in outdoor activities so the Android thing is new to me.

I have had a Zen Touch 2 for three weeks and to date there are two main issues that have grabbed my attention:

  1. Creative NEED to tidy their act up!  This device does not come with a manual and their website is poor, it is just too much work.  App availability is a real problem, the device can’t be register with the main app stores/markets and the Creative ZiiO Space only has ten (yes 10) apps listed for the Touch 2.  Direct enquiries about the compatibility of other apps got me nowhere.   As for the Creative help forums…. Well I have had the device for three weeks and I can’t do more than log in (I can’t even search the threads/posts).

Seriously, when compared to the Creative site and forum, using a Google/Bing search is significantly more productive.

  1. The devices operation is at best average and its sloooowww!  Battery life is poor (especially if you use WIFI), video isn’t smooth (I have tried 3 player apps) and it crashes, particularly when trying to go online with the Firefox app (the preloaded browser is more stable).

I am forming the view that this device is poor value for money.  I mean it is possible to spend similar cash and get an unlocked smart phone with WIFI, a better rear camera (and the inclusion of a front one), the latest android version, a better battery, a better processor etc etc.

It isn’t that there is one huge problem with the device.  It is just so average to below average with messy support that I’m left wondering why someone would fork out good money for the Touch 2 (I didn’t).  Simply, for similar cash you could get a smart phone with better spec, gain access to the app store(s) and, if wanted you can pop in a sim  and also have a phone…

So, from me, the Zen Touch 2 gets 4.5/10.

As so many have said.  “Why would someone buy this”...  It is like choosing to buy half of a low spec smart phone!
