Rhinelander amp only outputs to right channel at low volumes

I recently purchased a Rhinelander headphone amp, and have run into an issue where I can only hear output from the right channel when listening at a very low volume. When I turn the volume up, both the left & right channels seem to output the same volume. I've tried using different audio sources/headphones etc, all with the same results. As a novice in higher-end audio, I was wondering if I have defective unit or if this is normal behaviour?

It's common for volume pots to be imbalanced at their lowest volumes. Higher-quality pots tend not to have this problem (or at least it's less severe), but of course they cost more too. Since Lehmann made the Rhinelander as a lower-cost alternative to the Linear, the volume pot is possibly one component they economized on.

If the problem is that you find that you have to play the volume too loud to get balanced channels, you can try lowering the overall gain. According to the Rhinelander's whitesheet, there's a jumper inside the case you can set to change the gain. That won't be useful if it's already at the low gain position, though it's worth checking.
