A proper review

I've was looking around for reviews but all i got was well.... people fighting.

can't upload photos right now but will soon do as soon as i can get my alpha working again.

Equipment: Indeed "hifi" tube amp 12AU7

Price: 80$

Tested with: HD555, HD800 *borrowed(i can't afford one ;( ), Sony MDR 7506, Beyer DT100

Source: IPOD touch, fubar DAC (no amps pre-amps or drivers used)

Build: sturdy with a crappy PCB i wasent to excited by the work done. Tube slot of good quality with standard good quality components.

Component wise: IRF630 used BAAAD to use a power switching MOSFET in an audio   amp. should be replaced by the IRF610 to get more clear high's. good quality caps could use higher voltage rating for transients.

Sound quality: well, disaponting in fact with loads of crosstalk and early hi frequency roll off. if you know how that pocket radio of your sounds well, you get the idea. With stock settings i would never consider this amp however with just a little bit of soldermagic and voila a great sounding pre-amp.

High's : stock = baaad i would never consider this as something that i would like to buy

Mid's : stock, somewhat distorted and loads of crosstalk

low's : stock supprisngly this is the only thing this amp delivers with nice even and warm bass clear impact and best of all, due to the IRF630's the lows are clear.

conclusion: buy if you can do mods on this otheriwse go for a class A or a high end cmoy instead dont be tempted by that tube as the ss side of this amp is not transperent enough to deliver the warm tube sound.

Sound quality: 5 out of 10

build quality: 7 out of 10

most importantly, is it a true tube amp? no

Rohan

Edit: sorry the new G2 version has IRF510's as stock

How old is the amp you reviewed? Indeed hi-fi lab states that IRF has been 510, not 630, since 28.05.2010.. Should make quite a difference?

I had the older version with the IRF630, with the IRF510 expect good but not fantastic treble but as for the crosstalk you still need to mod it.
