Linux and minimaliist audio players

Thread Starter

Hi All,

I've probably messed around with most of the players available for Linux, from a variety of mpd clients to Songbird, but I admit that I am so lazy that I dont use most of the feature set available in many of these players - I dont care about cover art etc. I downloaded Decibel Audio Player and, so far, I'm happy with the way it just does its job without wanting to hook me up to internet radio. Interested to hear from others who are using a 'streamlined' player on Linux.

Cheers,

Always just been Amarok or Rhythmbox. But just as you found out I rarely use any of the options. I will definitely look into your choice. There must be one with a decent equalizer, but I probably would rarely use that even. It's something I haven't checked out  much. Thanks for the idea.

I'm happy with mpd and gmpc.   The most important criteria for me are gapless playback and tagged browsing by composer (for classical) and genre/artist (mostly for folk and jazz); remarkably few players can do all these.

I like deadbeef.  Great sound and simple.

Thanks for the feedback, guys - I havent looked at deadbeef for about 12 or so months, so I'll revisit it today.

I'm going to try DECIBEL ( thanks for the suggestion ) and a couple others. Looks pretty clean from their screenshots and they say it's modular. I see it has an EQ.

I especially like this from their homepage:

"Decibel Audio Player is a real audio player and does not include features that are not meant to be part of an audio player. These features, such as tagging files or burning CDs, generally have a better support in dedicated software. If you are looking for an audio player than can make coffee, then you should stay away from Decibel and give a try to other players"

POTAMUS looks even simpler and worth a shot for me to try too. Flac /ogg support, 24-bit, gapless.

The thing about decible is, it don't have any cue support. And the volume slider sometimes didn't work, dunno if its only me. I still use deadbeef, and gmpc. Foobnix when I want something different.

Personally use Amarok - haven't ever seen the need to change.

But here's a couple we were packaging for my distro (MEPIS)

 - Goggles Music Manager

 - Guayadeque Music Player

They were OK - just not for me.

qmmp ( http://code.google.com/p/qmmp/ ) is a great player. and it does support .cue files.

For listening sessions, where I want to browse my collection of FLACs, I use Exaile, much cleaner interface than Amarok, Banshee and Rhythmbox. For just playing back a single file, I use xmpp but it sounds like I need to give Decibel and Deadbeef a go. Anybody know of a good systemwide EQ with support for presets?

I've been a longtime fan of MoC.  I think it's about as simple as a media player can come.

I don't tend to mess with EQ and stuff, so I don't know if MoC does that.  I don't think it can scrobble either.

I'm considering switching to Linux on my laptop and was wondering, are there any players with support for VST plugins? /hijack

Managed to find this install guide for Ubuntu at least. It may be available for different distros I have no clue. It seems like it's a systemwide EQ...presets unsure yet just found this link.

Be sure to read the posts below for issues that may arise if any.  I have yet to try this out, but wanted to post it up anyhow. Good luck. I'lll get around to trying it eventually. Computer mods take priority now.
