Beyer DT880 (600 ohm) and Vinyl

Hi everyone,

I just received some DT880's (600 ohm) and hooked them up to my little dot 1+ and I don't think that my amp can cut the mustard.

My current setup is Musical Hall mmf 5.1 (with a Goldring G 2100 cartridge) into an audio technica PEQ3 phono preamp into the Little dot 1+.

I got the DT 880's because I would like to have the clarity that is mentioned in this article

When I first plugged them into my setup, I had to turn the knob on the amp to the 9 o'clock position to get decent volume.  I had expected this and figured I would have to get a more powerful amp.  I was thinking that maybe the little dot IV se might be a good choice.  I was looking around the $400 mark.  Do you think the LD IV se would be able to drive the 880's or should I look elsewhere.  It is also possible that I need to get a better preamp but I am not sure.

I listen to mostly classic rock vinyl and live audience recordings of grateful dead shows.

Let me know what you guys think.

Thanks in advance.

Apart from the obvious volume issue due to the high impedence, I do find DT880/600 much easier to drive than a lot of other headphones. Even my cheap $50 solid state amp were able to give justice to the phones.

I usually pair my DT880/600 with LDIII though and it worked fine.

Do you have the vintage DT880's or newer ones? I ask because I really have to turn up the volume knob of my amps when I am using the DT880's with 600 Ohm. Maybe it is useful to give some output voltages and the output impedance for comparison. Without question the 600 Ohm play an important role but contrary the T1 also have 600 Ohm and I really need the half of loudness to get nearly the same SPL due to construction facts.

Do you really have to crank the volume knob to get decent volume out of the headphones with the LD III?

I have the newer ones.

So, I think they already have a better efficiency as the old ones. Maybe it is the input level which is too low.
