My only sources are a Macbook Pro and iMac.

This question is also relevant to my interest as I have also been looking at the HRT Streamer II+ to use with the Lyr to power the HE-4 and D7000.

All I can say on the matter is that the Lyr got very positive remarks being fed by my MSII+ and laptop at the Seattle meet a few weeks ago. Using my laptop was the very reason I got my MSII+ knowing I would also get another DAC for my stationary listening room rig. I dont have any other DACS so I cant review anything but I plan on the Music Hall 25.3 or a Schiit DAC here in the near future. All in all though I really like the MSII+ for its size and the sound is great to my ears.

EDIT: I have no clue why my font changed in the middle of my typing. This was not intended lol.

If you can wait, you're probably better off going for the Schitt DAC.  I never cared much for the HRT MSII+.  It sounded too smooth to me, to the detriment of detail and palpability.

If you're not adverse to rolling up your sleeves a bit, the MH 25.2 is a no brainer.  It's a great DAC for twiddlers.

How about for non-twiddlers? 25.3? What confuses me about the Music Halls are whether they are just DACs or DAC/AMPs.

"By uniting a state of the art digital to analog converter with a tube output we produce the clarity precision of a 24bit DAC with warm rich open sound people love of tubes."

^That...

But the 'warm sound' turns me off completely.

I think I'll wait for the Schiit Dac and use the E7 in the meanwhile....

I haven't heard the 25.3, so I couldn't say, but I would suspect it's capable of good performance.  I haven't really read much about its performance yet either.

The "warm sound" is completely dependent upon what tube you use.  I wasn't bowled over by the sound of the stock 25.2 when I fist heard it.  I mean it sounded good, but not exceptional in any way.  I suspected it had potential though so I bought one.  I'm so glad I did, because after rolling tubes and tweaking some other things, it sounds exceptionally good to me now.  YMMV

So it just changes the DAC's sound, it's not an independent amp/dac, right?

I realize how stupid this sounds, but I never heard of a DAC that uses tubes.

The tube is the line level driver for unbalanced audio out.  The headamp is a convenient trouble shooting tool, but unexceptional as a headamp.  It's all very tweakable though.

Well, personally I just need a dac for a computer being a source. I have no intention of hooking up any other components like a CD player, receiver, or anything else some audiophiles may want to hook up. I am starting to enjoy this hobby, but I'm trying to make it as basic as possible, using one of my macs. I don't want to pay for any extra features that some quality dacs may have, all i need is a good quality usb dac. I only mentioned the Music Streamer II+ because I've seen a few members on here use it for the Lyr and it seems to work very well with macs, and being as basic as they come. I know Schiit may be in the process of making a dac but we have no idea how long it may take.

Don't get me wrong, I only been involved in this for a few months and I am content with the set up i have now, but I know I will want to eventually upgrade and use my current set up as a back up or bring it to work, I'll figure that out later. I like the e7/e9 combo, but I love the e9 more. The first thing I would upgrade in my current set up would be the e7.

If others can offer more choices/opinions please chime in.

Sampson,

Looks like a sweet setup!  I appreciated how well the Lyr was packaged... everything was so snug and secure... although it probably didn't look like appreciation when I ripped through the packaging to get the thing set up.

I wish you many hours of enjoyment with this and the Denons.

Agreed the packaging was excellent, And for the people saying they don't like the MSII + i guess that's your own personal opinion. I love my MSII + and highly recommend it with the lyr. I have been using this now for close to a couple weeks and all i can say is wow. If your looking for a dac to combine with this amp you cant go wrong with the MSII +. I mostly listen to rock and old school rap and cant praise this setup enough.
