I've recently decided to look for a speaker setup after sticking with headphones for quite a few years. I've been using Denon AHD2000 headphones + Maverick Audio D1 DAC/AMP for listening but I'd like to expand to a speaker setup as I will be moving out of my dorm and into a larger and more personal space. As I can use my D1 as a preamp (it is noted for being quite capable for this), I would like to go with a passive speaker/amp setup. Secondly, the room size won't be huge so the next question is whether to go floorstanding or bookshelf speakers. Is there really an appreciable difference in sound quality at entry level/midrange prices? Ideally it would be a 2.0 setup, I'm not a basshead and don't really want to add a subwoofer into the budget. The speakers will be used 99% of the time for music listening via lossless audio files from my pc through the DAC. Musical preferences sway largely in the rock direction, with heavy emphasis on Melodeath (Soilwork, Dark Traquility, Amon Amarth), Classic Rock (Stones, Who, Pink Floyd), with a bit of electronica and other genres thrown in. As stated before I'm not a basshead and find it to cover my favorite aspects of music when overblown. I much prefer high clarity and great guitar representation. Budget is ideally no more than $1k for speakers and amp. I am willing to look for used deals on ebay and audiogon etc if the gains are worth it.
