Sound Card or DAC for KRK Monitors

Hey everyone,

Thanks for your help in deciding on which speakers to purchase. I ended up buying the KRK Rokit Rp6's refurbished for $129 each from guitar center. Seemed like the best overall best deal for the price.

After waiting for them to be restocked and some dealing with Guitar Center, which has great customer service by the way, I finally have both monitors up and running. So far I am impressed, but not wowed so to speak. I have a feeling I should have gone with amp+bookshelf+sub route for this amount of money. However I am going to listen to them for a few weeks before I decide on anything.

I need to address the noise/static I hear when no audio is coming out of them. Right now I am running 3.5mm audio to rca to the monitors. Not the most ideal set up. I have been researching for the last couple hours and it seems like the most recommended pci-e sound cards are:

Keep in mind I would like to spend under $100...

1. Asus Xonar DX

2. HT Omega Striker

3. A variant of the X-fi series

as for a usb dac I am not opposed to this, but I am unsure what the advantages and disadvantages are.

The only pair of headphones I have are the Melec m6. For the money I spent on them I am pretty happy with them, I mostly use them when I am studying or late at night. However I feel like they give a much smoother and almost more pleasant sound than the KRK's. Time will tell though. Anyways, this leads me to the next point is that I might eventually want to venture into getting a nice pair of headphones to really experience what audio is capable of sounding like thus I feel like a usb dac with a built in amp would be a better long term investment.

Any opinions?

Thank you very much,

-Darren

Skip getting an X-fi unless you are going to be gaming or something.

I would recommend saving up more for something like one of Audio-gd's or Nuforce's desktop amp/DACs.  They would also better bring out your speakers' excellence.  evil_smiley.gif
