Ultrasone

Thread Starter

ok I have the price range of around 170$ and am looking heavily into ultrasone cans (as I have a grado sr125i and use it for rock, I want something to use for hip hop and movie listening that will sound just as well with rock and can be run out of a PA2v2)

so can someone who has heard/or owned any of the below listed give me a review of their sounds and if they are worth the price. For the moment I am leaning heavily on the 580's as they are said to have more warm sounding and a more fun listening sound to them

580s

780's

Dj1pro

and anything else you can think of that is in my price range and complements my sr125i's.

THANKS SO MUCH

I was in pretty much the same situation as you are, and I picked up the DJ1's, which are the same as the HFI-580, for 170$ shipped from B&H. Sound is alike to the SR125i but a bit bassier. I gotta say I'm really satisfied with my purchase.

Don't believe so.  Pretty sure they are different animals.

so what would be the best according to my preferences? leaning toward pro1s

Just fyi, the 580 and DJ1pro are listed @ 101db and 104db respectively.  So there may be some slight diffference.  Everything else seems identical specwise down to the SLogic plus.

Edit - DJ1 is listed similarly @104db

No idea what the diff is between the pro and non pro DJ.

what would the 101db and 104db change about the cans?

sensitivity to your power.  These are all spec readings and say nothing to how they actually sound different.  You'll have to ask someone that has heard both those.  I personally like the looks of the 580 myself which is why I bought it at the time.

If you're still seeking an answer, I can offer a little insight.

The main difference:  PRO models are made with professionals in mind; producers, engineers, dj's, etc. People who wear headphones daily to make a living.

The PROS earpads are removable, spare pair included.

Two chords come with them, a coiled and a straight, that screw into the headphone.

And the plug size is opposite typical headphones, 1/4 inch with an 1/8 inch adaptor.

As far as sound goes, I couldn't tell ya. But I do know Maxwell's Silver Hammer by the Beatles really proves their 'surround sound' claims. Trippy for sure.

Hope that helps.

If you're still looking for an answer, you also might want to consider the HFI-680's. I've read that they are a tad bit more balanced than the 580/DJ1 and are pretty much the same price on amazon.com.

I think the DJ1 PRO is the same as their 550 Pro model, which has a larger soundstage and swappable earpieces and cables. I'm thinking of purchasing the 680's for now and if I really like the Ultrasone sound signature, I might upgrade to the DJ1 PRO's in the future.
